Some reports starting to filter in of light sleet/snow around the Austin metro at 8:45 a.m.

Nothing downtown yet but cloud deck to the northwest seems to be getting darker.

It's 39F here with on and off flurries. There has been some sleet & snow grains mixed-in at times.

Here is a radar shot:

Sounds like things are getting interesting down south today. Hope everyone sees some snow.

Perhaps this is to early to mention it, but what about next week. It this monster storm everyone talked about a few days ago with the huge high going to move south into Texas? I have not heard anything so I was not sure if that meant it was not going to happen now or if people were just talking about today mainly.

Looks like a narrow band from the southern suburbs of Houston to the coast are the only ones that will see significant accumulations out this storm. There's another band of snow a long I-20, but little if any of that is hitting the ground because of the dry atmosphere. The Austin area might get some scattered flurries in the next hour or two as the trough axis passes through. The upper level system is flying by too fast for anything significant to happen inland.

Looks like Portastorm's omega block is holding out quite well

Mods, please delete Ntxw from the user list!

All kidding aside ... yeah, the block is holding alright. At this point, we're hoping to just see some flurries. Even my prediction to my kids this morning that we would see a "trace" of snow looks doubtful. I can't believe this.

Well I guess I answered my own question. This is from the NWS in Ft. Worth this morning.

THE NEXT POTENTIAL WINTER EVENT TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY LOOKS LESS
LIKELY WITH TODAYS MODEL RUNS. THE GFS IS FARTHER NORTH WITH THE
UPPER LOW...WARMER WITH TEMPERATURES...AND MOVES THE PRECIP OUT
WELL BEFORE ANY COLDER TEMPS APPROACH THE AREA. GIVEN THE
UNCERTAINTY WITH THE MODELS...WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP MENTION OF
ONLY LIQUID PRECIP IN THE FORECAST.

I think a lot of people didn't consider that when it gets cold enough for snow, often times the dew points are too low (Virga). Maybe next week will bring a better chance for snow

You see my post above yours? Looks like we are going to miss out next week, unless you have seen something else.

There is a monster high that's expected to build up north, 1050mb+. It's difficult to believe (as of right now) that such an intense high with such cold air would simply fizzle out. That might play more of a role into forecast than what it is right now

Talking about it in the S plains thread, it's still too early. Last year I remember vividly that when a high this strong would build the models had no clue how to handle the cold. We'll know more going into the weekend.

I was at the Wal Mart in La Porte about an hour ago and it was snowing hard with huge flakes. When I left I had to use my sweat shirt and wipe the snow off the windows so I could drive home.. BRRRRRR!!!!

Has any one heard of any road/bridge closers here in Houston. my husband is in Baton Rouge heading home here in Deer Park.
I need to let him know if he needs to take a different way home.
