Texas winter wx thread (2009-2010)

This will be the third time I have had at least two snow experiences in one Winter here in Houston.

It's pretty amazing indeed.

I find it equally amazing that since I moved here in 2005, I have experienced more snow/sleet events here than I did for a stretch in Dallas from about 2000-2005. Granted, up there we had quite the snowstorm (Valentine's 2004) and much colder temps at times....but we've had, what, 6 or 7 bouts of winter weather here since then? When I was at Tech in the early 90's I met some fellow students from Houston who claimed to have never seen snow before. I move here and we get this...pretty crazy stuff if you ask me.

The warm layer at the surface was just too much for the snow to overcome as it fell. The temperature can't drop if the dew point is in the 34-37 degree range. The airmass to our north just wasn't cold enough for advection alone to get us below freezing.

But I still think most of us (except near the coast) will see at least some snow fall in the next 5-8 hours. The later it falls, the lighter it'll be, though. Down to 38 at my house now, a sign that maybe I'll see some sleet soon. Maybe a bit of snow by 7pm to 8pm.

I was actually very surprised at the temperature gradient...I left my house in Tomball at 3PM it was 40F with a dewpoint of 39F, and went to Magnolia (15 miles north), and it was all snow and 36F. Just that little bit did the trick. 5 more miles up the road and it was 33F with heavy snow.

SG we still have hurricane season. And according to JB on Accuweather it's going to be a nasty one. Sorry off topic.

It'll be here before we know it! A lot of people complained about the slow season last year, but I have to admit, it was nice not evacuating and coming home to utter devastation. You know what I mean?

I have a new "appreciation" for hurricanes... I've always been fascinated by them and I still am, but I really like my house!


As for the snow falling nearby, it's getting closer but I'm not confident it will changeover here before the precip dries up. I have a different opinion every time I look at the radar.
The temp is steadily, slowly dropping now though.

Yeah, I've heard about the legendary snow of 1973. I think we have some links to pics in the Se Texas thread. 1973 was the year I was born...in Tampa, Florida. We had snow there in 1977, when I was four.

It's pretty amazing in itself that pretty much every major city along and north of I-10 in Texas in one winter season has seen snow (many of them measurable). That's tough to do in a decade!

Precip in Texas aside from east Texas along the Louisiana border is starting to break. Typical of an ending situation, banding is starting to happen. If you can get under one of those bands long enough, might be able to get a coating. Looks like majority of the accumulating snow is nearing it's end.

It was legendary. I was there in it, in Spring Branch in '73.

Then we moved to Oregon and it snowed every other day. Only took 10 months of that for my parents to say we were moving back to Texas. I think we've had more snow this winter than they have in Oregon.

Light snow here continuing. Nothing sticking though...pretty much like what we had here in December.
