Meanwhile, anyone see the 12z Euro op run? .... hee, hee ... we may get to do this all over again next weekend!

The PWC promised you a better winter than 12-13 and we delivered!! :cheesy:

Could be, that is very heavy. But radar is starting to pop again in places. And sat photo shows higher cloud tops just to the west of DFW. Still lift to come through.

I think the RAP is very wrong. Maybe in Tyler, not in DFW.

:uarrow: agree

Well, coverage is not going to be like the December 2013 where everyone got a good amount (the "precipitation shield"), this precipitation is more convective in nature so if you get under a sleet band, you'll get a lot quickly - which I did here, if you don't, you aren't going to get as much. Lift definitely seems to be increasing a bit, so people including the Dallas proper should get some, but it looks like Ft Worth and north of DFW proper are seeming to get a lot more (since they were under the convective thundersleet showers and under them now)

I think precip is largely over for DFW, just a few stray areas of light freezing rain / sleet. Tyler and eastward will enjoy some wintry precip.

Steve McCauley wrote:Before I head off to study for a couple of quizzes I thought I would pass along another "first" for me since I have been here in north Texas.

Typically, in order to get snowflakes to form, temperatures in the clouds above must reach about 14 °F or colder. Now, the temperatures between 2,000 and 5,000 feet above DFW right now are still running in the lower 50s. This means any snowflakes passing through this layer would melt and then refreeze as they fall into the cold temperatures near the ground. This is why we have been seeing sleet. Sleet is essentially melted snowflakes that refreeze before hitting the ground. OK..no surprise there. This is why I painted the orange on my forecast maps from last night.

But here's the kicker: Temperatures have reached 14 °F in the clouds BELOW 2,000 feet. Snow crystals are actually forming BELOW the warm air layer aloft and immediately falling out of the clouds. Since they do not have to pass through the melting layer above them, they are cheating and are able to make it to the ground.

I have never - and the word is NEVER - seen this happen before in north Texas (Michigan, yes; Texas, no) - and it has to be exceedingly rare for the month of March!

I just want 1 rumble of this infamous thundersleet we've read so much about today on this forum. I suspect you're experience is much like mine with very little sleet on the ground. When the precip total graphics come out tomorrow or next day, it'll show our area as one of those that didn't get much.
