Coastal storm off the Jersey and Delaware coast on Thursday night

A wet, windy and snowy storm system will visit the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday afternoon.

With plenty of moisture and mid-level energy sweeping through the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys, a coastal storm will develop off the Carolina coast on Thursday and quickly strengthen.

By Thursday night, it will be positioned just off the Mid-Atlantic coast.

Strong, easterly winds will develop off the Atlantic and sweep onshore. Gusts to 50 or even 60 mph are expect to impact coastal locations over Delaware, New Jersey and Long Island.

As expected, wind advisories and high wind warnings are in place. Delaware | New Jersey

Along with the gusty onshore winds comes the threat for coastal flooding.

Onshore winds will allow for higher than average tide levels and give way to water making its way farther inland along the coast.

Coast flood advisories: New Jersey | Delaware | Connecticut | New York

This is a quick-hitting storm. It will be moving away from the Mid-Atlantic coast by Friday afternoon (if not earlier) and the southern New England coast by Friday night.

Moisture from this storm system will also spill into the higher elevations of central Pennsylvania.

It's here where a heavy wet snow is expected to fall beginning Thursday afternoon and into the early morning hours of Friday.

Winter storm watch: Central Pennsylvania

48-hour rain/snow forecast
This is an early season storm and trees still have plenty of leaves.

The National Weather Service warns that if several inches of snow accumulates on trees, significant tree damage and damage to power lines will likely result.

early thursday snow is mixing in as far SE at Southern central CT...! the BL appears cool enough thanks to the dome of high pressure....

I think areas in NW NJ over 1200 ft and PA over 1800 feet see decent accumulations Today....and then i believe tonite should the low get going it could bury PA and Nw NJ /SE NY and west CT with some snows.....Central/N PA looks like the bullseye to get a UNPRECEDENTED early season Storm.....probably over a foot IMO....I mean look at the soundings and the estimated precip ....take into account the cold that is established.....should the precip get heavy it will be all snow....forget climo .....this looks like a storm that has the potential to suprise alot of forecasters....not to mention the second shortwave may do the SAME thing late Sat...nite as well.

look at the national radar looks straight outta DEC....currently 36 degrees in My back yard....bring on the storm will be interesting to see what happens when the coastal low supposedly steals the show tonite i think the Easterly /NE flow that develops off the atlantic ahead of it will warm the boundary layers possibly thru NW NJ depending on how deep the low gets....it should be a close call tonite in NW NJ above 1000 feet to wether they see a damaging snow event IMO...lastly the other question is how far north east does the heavy precip get ....NW CT above 800ft could get plastered as well...where a ENE/NE flow will still be over cooler land.

I was all dressed up for winter today for work - WINTER COAT and all.

Very raw at the Jersey shore. The back bays at high tide were higher than normal and there was some flooding in some of the streets closer to the back bays. There was also a coast flood warning issued for the coastal counties of New Jersey until 11:00 am.

There was also a 10 degree temperature difference between the coast and 50 miles inland both yesterday and tonight. It went from the mid to low 50's at the shore to the mid to low 40's at home. You can understand why there was a winter storm advisory and warning in the northern and western suburbs of Philadelphia and the Poconos.

HOLY COW! wow ....really wow

took a drive at 230 pm from burlington, MA out to Wachuset mountain....as i was leaving i noticed some wet flakes were mixing in.....me and gf bought sleds at Lowe's Today! and we were going to try them out.......snow mixed with rain till i got about 20 miles from mountain.....then it was HUGE FLAKES but no sticking yet.......a mile before i got off the exit around 700 feet elevation....at that time....i was wondering wether there would be sledding or not (315pm) .....as i approached the wachusett exit we gained another 150 feet or so and snow began sticking on the ground.....the ride over to the mountain had much of the same....a bit heavier snow ....grass half covered........we pulled into the base of the mountain (another 100 feet up and there was a solid inch everywhere...nice...but still not enough for sledding.....

i decided to try and drive up the mountain and see what was up.....drove up the side road to get toward the summit access road....(gained another 250 feet and BAMMMM! the summit road was blocked off and there was 3 inches at approx 1200ft elevation on mountain and coming down...talked to some folks who were there about sledding spots and they said to walk up the summit access road till you hit one of the slopes and give it a whirl.....walked about 3/4 mile and got to approx 1400=1450 feet elevation and it was a BLizzard....vis less than 1/4 mile ......had a BLAST sledding down the access road and even a couple snow covered slopes...awesome....only people on mountain....and we were very careful to choose slopes that had a fairly LOW INCLINE....(when we left at 430....i took a measurement and there was approx 6 inches accumulation at 1400 feet.......4.5 inches at 1200 feet also.........

then believe it or not when i got down to 800 feet there was NADA....a dusting....and wet snow falling....the people that i talked to (when i got there) said there was a solid half foot plus at 3:00p.m at summit (they hiked) must have been snowing at 1.5 or so inches an hour at 1400 feet ...and higher rate at summit...

got home and drove thru some of the heaviest snow of the day (it looked like a mid winter Blizzard!) and there was about a dusting on the grass......for fun took a drive up the biggest hill (in burlington) down the street from me and there was a solid inch....

WIll post pics SOON

Bumping Windtalker1's thread up. Maybe mods might add an s to storm so we have the mid-atlantic storms thread for this winter?

Anyway, here in the Washington D.C. region you can bet their ready for the two inches of the white stuff. Got the on call crews standing by on the shoulders of the highways, and the sand crews etc hopping. Will be a mad rush at the grocery store as usual, Costco already was yesterday.

Going to do some cold weather cookin: probably meatless chile, separate veggies like squash to give us some carotene. Of course hubbie will want to throw in the cow, but I'll hold him off with the frying pan. Yikes, don't want us on tv, so will rethink the later.

Anyway, can this be our Mid-Atlantic Winter Storms thread or might Windtalker start another? I'd love to share realities and stories this winter.

Happy holiday tree hunting: too short, too tall, too skinny, just wrong? :cold:
