#1 Postby jinftl » Sat Feb 20, 2010 8:23 pm

After a start to February that featured below normal temps in Fairbanks, AK, the last week has more than evened out the average temperature for the month to date. In fact as of yesterday, the avg temperature in Fairbanks was running +7.5 deg above normal for the month to date. The last 2 days have been running almost 30 degrees above normal!!!

Here are the avg temperature anomalies of the past week in Fairbanks:
2/15: +22 deg above average
2/16: +13 deg above average
2/17: +19 deg above average
2/18: +27 deg above average
2/19: +27 deg above average

It's not just Fairbanks that has been warmer than average...how is this for a February temperature in Alaska.....'

500mb heights have been above normal for a while over Alaska. Not surprised its that warm. Not sure if its also El Nino/PDO related or not.

That warmth has to come down sometime, hopefully not anytime soon (especially for the olympics).

Definitely serves as a reminder that while it may be cold in our own area, that is not a sign that the rest of the world is also experiencing below normal temps (and above normal snowfall) this winter...just ask the folks in Vancouver! Highlights what is meant by weather vs. climate.
