Washington, DC - Mid-Atlantic Winter Prediction

To you viewers in the DC area, a local weather team will be making their winter prediction tonight. For what it is worth, Ch. 9 WUSA at 11:00pm EST, team of Topper Shutt and Howard Bernstein will offer snowfall amounts for the area.

3. Mild and way below normal snow fall

Ok this could come off wierd.
Sorta Average to slightly below average as far as temps because the cold shots will be really cold but also on the backside it will be warm. Going from 15-25 degrees colder then average for highs then when it warms up it will be 5-15 above average. So i will go for -3 for the winter season for below average total for the highs.

Ok now snowfall will be about 5 to 15 inches above average. But we all know that one nor'easter could throw that all off. You do know those can be one heck of an event type of thing.

They also stated this last night...

Old Farmers Almanac = Cold and less snow

Hagerstown Almanac = Cold and more snow

Wooly Worms = Mild and no snow

Fortunately the Hagerstown Almanac has been on the money for years. Hopefully, the wooly worms just forgot to put on the right coats.

For De metro we are looking for a milder than normal winter on order of +0.5 to +1.0 for three month average. December quite mild on order of +2.0, January and Feb we are not in full agreement about but I see Jan as mild until 1/20 then turning colder but averaging about +0.5 for the month and then Feb quite cold on order of -1.0 to -2.0. We see below normal snowfall, 12-15" at DCA. We see a pattern of low pressure mostly over or to west of appalachians thur Dec, thus mild, and when it turns colder we see a lot of supressive action like 79-80 such that most snows miss DC although it will be very cold. We did not have single digit mins at DCA last winter, we see some for this winter, and we see 5+ days with highs in the 20's. We see no snowstorm greater than 5", with 1 or 2 snows in Jan and 1 or two in Feb.

.....hehe... this is what i call the ole' 'we have no clue' statement you get from mainstream wx (sometimes NWS) media alot! Im not bashing them, for i know they know more than me, its just that one can't rely on the forecasts much. Not all big mets, of course, but definately the majority that the mainstream population see. They never seem to fine tune anything until its already happening/happened, which a 3rd grader could do by looking out the window! Not sure if they a) don't have a clue , b) can't say due to bias (it happens) or are relying on just models, or what. it doesn't bother me , its just funny ! I wonder how many 'big' storms are never called (by major media mets) and how many 'flukes' are hyped in relation to this phenomena ? Anyone else ever noticed this?

....Weather53 and King and all the good 'underground' mets are great alternatives to this stuff!

I would say DC should have temps near normal with normal to slightly above snow. I think it will be a warm Dec (esp. first half of Dec), near normal Jan and cold Feb. I will guess there will be a good snowstorm in Feb of over 8".

About the woolly worm thing... just to let you everybody know... woolly worms do not predict the future weather... in fact they actually tell you what last winter was like, if you don't believe me you can go to this site:

Apparently, it seems that our wooly "friends" have poor short-term memories this year. Was it last winter's snow that buried them, providing them with a spell of amnesia? It's sure a good thing they don't have to take exams in school.
