Winter Weather for NC?

#1 Postby jpp5862 » Tue Dec 02, 2003 9:38 am

I noticed the NWS in Greenville-Spartanburg, SC issued a Special Weather Statement this morning for the possibility of wintry precip in the mountains and piedmont of NC late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. From what I have seen and read though that seems a little premature, it does not look to me like there will be enough moisture in place by that time. While I would love to get some snow or any type of wintry precip, other than a lot of ice like December 4 - 5 last year, I'm not too optimistic on seeing anything this week.

Any thoughts?

Yea I saw the same thing this morning. I thought that it was premature, but I guess they are pretty confident.

Looks as though any precip that falls will be rain, until the changeover at lunchtime on Friday. Im talking about Asheville.

Charlotte could see some snow by late afternoon. Accumalation will not occur till late that evening and better chances of snow are Saturday.

We'd better keep our eyes on this one......looks as if more cold air than forecast is filtering down the piedmont east of the Appalachians. If Charlotte, NC is gonna see a changeover to snow, it would seem that northern VA needs to stay on top of this particular system through early Monday.

I agree Jeb, but I am still not sure how much we will see here. I noticed the NWS has issued another special weather statement, which is basically a repeat of the one this morning. Looks like cold air will be in place to give us winter precip, if there is enough moisture here.

I will be interested to see how the forecasts get updated over the next 24 - 36 hours. I definitely wouldn't mind some winter weather.

Also, what about the second wave over the weekend? I wonder if that will also give us a chance for some winter precip?

...LIGHT WINTERY PRECIPITATION POSSIBLE FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY...

AN UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO MOVE EASTWARD OVER
THE MID ATLANTIC REGION LATE FRIDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND.
MEANWHILE... A SURFACE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP
NEAR THE CAROLINA COAST... AND TRACK NORTHEAST ON SATURDAY. ENOUGH
MOISTURE MAY WRAP AROUND THIS LOW PRESSURE AREA TO BRING LIGHT
PRECIPITATION TO NORTH CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA LATE FRIDAY NIGHT
THROUGH SATURDAY. EARLY INDICATIONS SHOW THAT THE ATMOSPHERE MAY BE
COLD ENOUGH FOR ANY PRECIPITATION TO FALL AS A FEW SNOW FLURRIES. IF
ANY FLURRIES WERE TO OCCUR... NO ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED.

THERE REMAINS A GREAT DEAL OF UNCERTAINTY REGARDING THE UPPER LEVEL
LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM... THE COASTAL LOW DEVELOPMENT... AND THE EXTENT
OF COLD AIR. IN ANY CASE... NO MAJOR WINTERY WEATHER IS ANTICIPATED
AT THIS TIME. PEOPLE ACROSS THE AREA SHOULD STAY TUNED TO NOAA
WEATHER RADIO OR OTHER LOCAL MEDIA OUTLETS FOR THE LATEST
INFORMATION AND FORECASTS.

Yeh that was the best day of my life hahaha. Well not the best but that was probably my fondest weather memory to date. It was unbelievable looking out the window and seeing what had just happened. I didn't sleep a wink that night. Piles of snow didn't melt for a month or so in some places like parking lots!

Im no expert or anything, but doesn't there need to be a thin layer of cold air at the surface to support freezing rain? I dont see that in the models. Unfortunantly Asheville has no sounding reports.
There still is a lot of discrepency in the models. Hopefully the 12z run will be more inlined.
Either way we are looking at snow on Friday night and Saturaday....WOOT!

I agree SunDog, for Charlotte they are saying rain, snow or freezing rain. I guess since they are still unsure how the cold air will filter in.

It will be interesting to see when the moisture actually gets here and what the temperatures are then. This is definitely a difficult call but looks like we should see a little wintry precip, in one form or another before it is all said and done.

As usual though I think you all in Asheville will see more than we will. Hope you get some good snow out of this at some point.
