Cold Winds Begin Again in East
8AM EST, January 13, 2004
Residents of the Great Lakes, New
England and the Ohio Valley and Mid-
Atlantic will brace for another blast of
arctic air Tuesday afternoon and night.
This latest surge could send
temperatures even lower than the
extreme cold experience this past
weekend in some locations.
The first signs of the arctic chill were
being seen early Tuesday across the
northern Great Lakes in northern
Michigan and Minnesota. Temperatures
at a WeatherBug live sensor in Thunder
Bay, Canada had dropped to 7 degrees
below zero.
Temperatures in International Falls,
Minnesota on the Canadian Border
were down to 9 degrees below zero.
Wind chills will also be a factor. The
same location was experiencing wind
chills down to 30 degrees below zero.
Across the border, in Winnipeg,
Canada, temperatures were down to 24
below zero with wind chills between 30
and 40 below zero.
Wind chill advisories have been posted
across the Great Lakes and northern
New England. With winds gusting from
20-30 mph and temperatures from 0 to
20 below zero, wind chill readings will
be in the range of 20 to 50 below zero.
Much colder air will also flow into the
Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. Early
Tuesday, temperatures ranged from the
upper 20s to the lower 40s. A
WeatherBug live sensor in Dover,
Delaware was at 41 degrees just before
dawn. By the same time on
Wednesday, temperatures will be
nearly 20 degrees colder across most
of these regions.
Snow is also on the horizon for a good
portion of the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic
and southern New England.
An "Alberta Clipper" will drop out of
Canada and track from Northern
Minnesota late tonight to the Maryland
coast by early Thursday. This storm will
spread a swath of very dry fluffy snow
just north of the track. Snowfall
amounts will range from one to six
inches.
