noreeaster New England?

#1 Postby stazcz » Sun Jan 25, 2004 4:06 pm

I was just reading our local weather forecast from the national weather forecast office in Taunton Mass and they really seem to be zeroing in on a potential heavy snow Tue and Wed for New England. basically they are saying that the storm will fizzle out thats moving into the middle of the country and a new storm will bomb out off the New Jersey Coast. We may get 2-5 inches from the leftovers of the first storm then a change to freezing rain as far north as New Hampshire. As the coastal storm takes over a rapid fall in temps with a quick change to heavy snow all the way south to Cape Cod. This sounds like a very interesting scenario if it plays out. They indicate that all models are now agreeing fairly closely to this situation.

If it changes to heavy snows on the cape than it will snow along the coast from NJ to Maine.

I think PVD/Providence should be all or mostly snow, with maybe a period of sleet tuesday, before going to heavy to very heavy snow, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour likely tuesday night and into early wednesday morning...

I'm expecting totals of 10 to 16 inches for all of SNE except for the south coast and cape cod where right now I think 6 to 10 inches because of some sleet/freezing rain changing to heavy snow but not quite as heavy as the snow will be inland.

Stay tuned...this could be a dousy.

BTW, 10-16" for Providence NO doubt in my mind.

Totals may need to be upped if ratios away from the coast are indeed 15:1 with 1.25 inches of precipitation expected for N CT and N RI.

Is definately an interesting scenerio coming up. Mid-level warming is possible allowing some mixing before secondary low takes over Tues nite thru Wed midday. Local forecasters starting to use the 1ft.+ snowfall potential. Check out latest discussion from NWS

WHILE THIS STORM IS STILL FAR AWAY...ITS LIKELY TO BRING ADVERSE
WEATHER TO SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND TUESDAY AFTERNOON INTO WEDNESDAY
MORNING. ITS SLOW EVOLUTION LEAVES THE TRACK A LITTLE UNCERTAIN...BUT
IN ALL LIKELIHOOD...TRAVEL WILL BE IMPACTED FROM THE UPPER OHIO
VALLEY...SOUTHERN AND WESTERN SECTIONS OF NEW YORK STATE ACROSS THE
MID ATLANTIC STATES INTO SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND.

ITS A BIT EARLY TO PINPOINT THE AREA OF HEAVIEST SNOW BUT THERE IS A
GOOD CHANCE THAT 8 INCHES OR MORE WILL FALL IN AN 18 HOUR PERIOD OVER
LARGE SECTIONS OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND. SLEET COULD COMPLICATE
MATTERS ALONG THE SOUTH COAST.

SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE MAY ESCAPE THE BRUNT OF THE SNOW.

WIND IS NOT EXPECTED TO MAJOR PLAYER IN THIS EVENT.

ONCE FORECASTERS BECOME MORE CERTAIN OF A HEAVY SNOW THREAT...A WATCH
WOULD BE ISSUED...POSSIBLY AS EARLY AS MONDAY MORNING.

CURRENT PROJECTIONS INDICATE THE WEDNESDAY MORNING COMMUTE WOULD BE
MOST ADVERSELY IMPACTED...WITH THE TUESDAY EVENING COMMUTE IN
CONNECTICUT AND RHODE ISLAND ALSO A CANDIDATE FOR SIGNIFICANT IMPACT.

ANYONE WITH TRAVEL PLANS IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND TUESDAY AFTERNOON
INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING SHOULD KEEP ABREAST OF LATER STATEMENTS AND
FORECASTS.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO AND OTHER LOCAL MEDIA FOR FURTHER
DETAILS OR UPDATES.
