Northeast Prepares For a Major Winter Storm

A developing winter storm is expected
to hit the Northeast hard Tuesday into
Wednesday. The storm will track along
the coast before heading out into the
Atlantic.

A mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow
will develop into parts of the Mid-
Atlantic Tuesday and move into the
Northeast by Tuesday afternoon. The
wintry mix will change to all snow by
late Tuesday night and continue into
Wednesday.

Up to a quarter of an inch of ice may
accumulate in the Washington D.C. and
Baltimore metro areas, with more
significant accumulations of ice
possible in Philadelphia. Utility
companies are bracing customers for
possible power outages from northern
Maryland into Pennsylvania.

In New York City and Boston, it will be
mostly snow that residents are forced to
deal with. Snow may accumulate from 6
to 9 inches by Wednesday morning in
New York and 6 to 12 inches in Boston.
The snow and ice will have a major
impact on travel. Road crews are
already out in full force from
Washington and Baltimore through
Philadelphia, while crews are on standby
from New York up to Maine. Airlines
are advising their passengers to call
ahead before making the trip to the
area airports.
