Storm observations for Lawrence, Kansas

#1 Postby sertorius » Sat Jan 31, 2004 5:21 am

Here we go!!!! NWS just put us in a Winter Storm Warning for Sunday morning thru Monday Afternoon-expecting 8-13 inches with near white out conditions tomorrow night into Monday-However, the freezing rain and sleet line is inching closer and closer to me-I still am gun shy about this-not to worry though-I'll bore you with updates anyway!!LOL-If this storm does verify (and seems it will) this will be the biggest single snow-storm we have had here since 1993!! Currently: clear and 11 degrees with a stiff east wind-clouds are beginning to overspread the area from the west!!

Lawrence/KC Potential Big Snowstorm

#2 Postby simplykristi » Sat Jan 31, 2004 10:54 am

Hi,
I know what you mean. Here in KC, we've not had a big winter snowstorm since the one on Feb. 27, 1993. We had 10.5 inches that day. The last big winter storm KC had was the ice storm two years ago.

I actually just moved to Lawrence from Kansas City last year and still work in KC. Lived in KC my whole life accept for college-I was living in Brookside during the ice storm-no power for 6 days!! This looks to be a bigger storm as far as travel problems are concerned. I'm still gun shy about this storm-burned too many times!! Things look good accept for possibly too much mixing that would bring down the totals. The NWS has me in a 12 inch band-I hope so!! This could be the biggest storm to impact our area in a decade-amazing isn't it??? Currently, the clouds are quickly lowering and the temp. has risen to 15 degrees-it is not rising real fast but steady!! Humidity is at 93%-seems like we may get some freezing drizzle here pretty soon-I'll update later and keep boring everyone through the night!! Some mets have us getting 16-17 inches-we shall see!!!

Major snow storm for Lawrence has now turned into a major sleet storm!!! Our predicted totals have gone down from 13 inches at 8:00 this morning to now barely 7 inches!! Man, I hate that warm air at the 850 level-it gets us every time!! I was kind of afraid this would happen-I would imagine that Kansas City, south of the river, will be lowering thier totals as well-looks as though North of the River still may get 10-12 inches-I'm about 15 miles South of that line!! Oh well-7 inches is still the biggest one event of this century for this area so I'm not going to complain!! But man 12 inches would be nice!! We'll see what happens-they posted a winter weather advisory for tonight and then the Winter Storm warning for tomorrow-freezing drizzle here by 4:00 this after noon or sooner-temp still rising-heck maybey by 9:00 tonight temps will be 33 and we'll have drizzle for 3 days!! LOL I'll bore you some more later-all kidding aside, we are in for one heck of a storm with ice then about 6-7 inches of snow and then winds about 30-35 MPH from the North!!

The Forecast Has Changed Here too...

#5 Postby simplykristi » Sat Jan 31, 2004 3:19 pm

Looks like a 1/4 inch of ice and then maybe up to 4 inches of snow. Big deal. Oh well, maybe next time Looking more and more like we got last Sunday and Monday. I would rather it do nothing at this point. It is just going to make communting to work a pain is all.

One last post for a while-temp has risen to about 25 degrees-now looks like we will get a total ice storm with some back side snow-I can't believe that the low is going to basically track right over the top of us!! For years I've watched areas south of us get big snows and dream of the storm tracking North-now, it is tracking too far north!! I doubt I post much more as this storm has now totally seemed to fizzle for us-1/4 inch of ice with 2-4 inches of snow!! No big deal-David, in Topeka still looks to be in the ball game as he is a bit further North-oh well, maybe the next model runs will change, but I doubt it!! Have a good day!!

We were just have a family discussion here about the major forecast change. We all hope it does nothing. I want a MAJOR snow for once not ice. I admit that I am very disappointed in the new forecast.

David:

We haven't had anything here yet-mets in KC have taken snow totals down to 2 inches with some ice-this storm is busting quick for this area-I still think you are North enough to see some snow-Lawrence will pretty much be sitting this one out as the low tracks right on top of us!! We're not even going to see that much ice!! I wish I knew what forced that low so far North-I guess I could get lucky and have these past few runs be a hiccup and have the low track further south, but by satalite it sure isn't looking that way-maybe next year-I really feel that this was my last chance at a good winter storm-combine this with KU's stellar performance today, and I'm batten a thousand LOL!!!

I shouldn't complain too much-heck two weeks ago, some ice and 5-10 inches of snow I would have been estatic-I was just so pumped for 13-14-and I'm still worried about winding up with a little ice and no snow-Oh well, maybe the storm will dip about 50 miles to the south and we could get back in the big game instead of the JV!! Temp around 28 with a stiff east wind-Atmoshpere is getting saturated-storm still located out in the 4 corners and is a bit unorganized-so, any thing can still happen!!!

KU Lost today Bummer :( I went to KU. :)

Back to the storm... Now they are saying up to half-inch ice and up to four inches of snow. I am afraid of another ice storm after the one in 2002. I don't like the idea of being without power for for at least four days like we were back then.

simplikristi:

I went to KU as well-that's why I'm back in Lawrence!!! To be honest, the ice and then the snow is going to make this storm even worse-the ice storm in 2002 was a once in a 100 year event, but it never really froze on the roads-I think this time, since it has been so cold and will be well below freezing, things will really ice up good!! Also, this storm still has to come together-by this time tomorrow, they could be singing a totally different tune!! We shall see!!

I dunno.. one of our local mets is calling for a foot or more for Topeka... NWS calling for 9-10... it's gonna be tough calling this.

I know David-if you look on the satalite and the national radar, this storm is still an unorganized mess-I'm not a met, nor do I really know that much about the weather, but it seems the KC mets are basing all their forecasts on a couple of runs of the gfs and eta-this storm track could still change-if the track takes a 40-50 miles dip to the south, you and I are both in the 10-15 range-if it went farther north, you're still good, and I'm done!!! But hey, to be honest, 1/4 to a 1/2 inch of ice and then 5-10 inches of snow followed by winds gusting to 30mph, is a serious situation!! We are getting a major winter storm-it just won't all be in the form of snow here in Lawrence; One last note: I sure wish the radar would begin filling in more to our south and west!! Temp. 25 degrees-dew Point 19-20 with a light mist. I'll update some more later just to bore everyone!!

I would love to live in Lawrence again! I do visit from time to time since I have relatives who live there. I love downtown Lawrence. :)

Ohhh I live about 15 mins southeast of your old neighborhood in KC. Glad you made the move to Lawrence :) How do you like the commute from Lawrence to KC?

Looks like an ice/snow event for us.

Good morning everyone-the storm is starting to get going here-we now have snow with a pretty good band comming in-looks like we could pick up a quick inch-temp. is currently 29 supp. to get to 32 today-I'm hoping this storm stays a bit to the south so we can have more snow than freezing rain-areas just to my south are forecasted to turn to rain today!!! Big rpoblem with this storm so far is 1. where will the snow/freezing rain line set up 2. How much moisture will we actually have. We had freezing drizzle last night so there is a lite coat of ice on the roads-traveling today and tomorrow here is going to be a mess to be sure-I'll update later-I just hope the warm air stays further to my south-NWS thinks I may get about 7-8 inches now-that's up a little from last night-have a great day!!
