Southern Wintry Events comming up! TX to the SE Coast!

#1 Postby Guest » Wed Feb 11, 2004 7:48 pm

Well looks like people in the south may be getting in on some long over do snows.

System 1.
First system tonight into Thursday night looks to bring a nice accumulation of snow from ARK/S.MO east into TN and southern KY on over into Western and northern NC and southern/Central VA. The heaviest snows looks to fall in the higher areas of W.NC where some could perhaps pick up close to a foot of snow and areas a little farther east into southern VA and northern NC could see anywhere from 3 - 7 inches of new snow. Accumulating snows from this system shouldnt get much farther north then the DE/MD line on the Delmarva and pretty much stay south of DC metro. Farther west to S.MO and N.AR including southern KY south into TN amounts for the most part shouldnt go over 4 inches. Perhaps a few spots could see more then 4 but shouldnt be that many.

System 2.
This is a very intresting system for the fact it could bring atleast snow flurries/light snow or mixed precip down to the gulf especially from AL/FL gulfcoast west to the TX gulfcoast. Areas a little farther north up towards Dallas and then eastward to the central and northern Gulfcoast states to the se coast "NC once again "could be seing a decent snow event for these areas from this system. Most areas south of i20 should start out as rain but end as snow and or perhaps a mixed bag of precip towards the coast on Saturday into Sunday from West to East as the cold core low passes over these areas which would include (Houston, TX-Saturday), (New Orleans, LA-Saturday night), and (Mobile, AL-Sunday). I will put out a map for this late tonight or tomorrow. It is still early and some things may change between now and Friday so keep checking back in for further updates on this!

These are exciting developments.

It will be interesting to see if Southeast Texas, including Houston, not to mention other areas in the Deep South can experience some snow or at least some mixed precipitation. It doesn't happen too often. In addition to some of the model guidance, it bears noting that some of the great winters of the past have had a Deep South snowstorm. Therefore, I would not be surprised to see System #2 deliver some snow to Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi, and parts of Texas, among other areas.

FLguy,

Yes, it looks very interesting. I'm not too worried about some of the inconsistencies in the various runs of the model guidance at this point in time. Now, the modeling is again showing the possibility of a storm threat.

All said, I would be very surprised if next week passes uneventfully.

I agree with KoW, only a little more conservatively. Two degrees colder F and we'll have accumulating snows at least one point, somewhere in MS or AL. It wouldn't take much to do that either.

One thing of note, and I will keep driving this home, is that the local and pro mets of this area, even those that have lived here 40 years, have a zero track record for accurately predicting accumulating snows in our part of the country.

Every WSW or Warning that went up 12 hours in advance of any forewarned system (or at least 98%) have busted in the 20 years I've lived here. All the significant snows of 3 inches or more were never forecasted 12 hours before the event.

I've thought about it...and decided, yeah a change of rain to snow would be a nice change.but a shame we don't get cold enough to get ground frozen.I do have enough wetness in onand about ground to freeze, but doubt would happen.if did get white flurrys.I will be setting out bowls on the truck for collecting flurries for snowcream!
Beaumont weather dude on 6 says sleet.I'd prefer fluffy stuffleast no worries of need for a snow shovel. It would melt way before found one.I doubt would find skis in TX but would have better luck converting a surf board.but hey....i got the hill if ever was to get snow worth sledding in.

I say let her blow!

I won't hold my breath but I am crossing all my fingers and toes. :)
An excerpt from a local met at KFDM in Beaumont:

THE WET WINTER CONTINUES WITH ANOTHER SYSTEM TO AFFECT THE AREA LATE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY! RIGHT BEFORE THE PRECIP ENDS SATURDAY AFTERNOON SOME SLEET WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH SOME FLURRIES JUST TO OUR NORTH!!

New models late tonight still showing no change! The rain/ snow line Saturday afternoon looks to be from College Station to Huntsville to Woodville and Jasper....I would not be surprised to see a few Flurries in the Triangle before the precip ends. The 540 thickness line is right over us.

note: Triangle = Beaumont, Pt. Arthur, Orange
