#1 Postby wrkh99 » Fri Feb 13, 2004 10:23 am

Does anyone remember the cold core system that dropped 7 to 8 inches from LA to Central MS and AL baCK In 1997. The snow wasn't forcasted at all and temps were in the 40's . Could we have a repeat Saturday night sunday morning . I sure hope so :)

I remeber that storm, becasue I was working in Dayton, Ohio at the time and due to that one storm. Jackson, MS had more snowfall for the season then we did in Dayton, Ohio.

Having worked in New Orleans recently, folks down there tell me it did sno a few inches on the Northshore of the lake.

Was it 97 James? I remember it being 96. At least, that is the last time we saw snow here in S. MS.

It was December 1997. No snow was forecasted at all for Meridian.

We woke up Sunday morning to over 6 inches on the ground, with snow continuing to fall :)

That was a pleasant surprise :)

wrkh,

How do you mean bust? In terms of a 'correct' forecast it's already been a bust. Accumulating snow wasn't even forecasted until today, and then boom we get a winter storm watch.

I'm very suspect of the models warming this thing too soon, and every run they've gradually gotten colder and colder. Upper lows are hard to forecast, and deep south snows are even harder to forecast - I can remember no real significant snowstorms that were ever correctly forecast before they 'surprised' everyone.

1997 was a perfect example. I went to bed Saturday night, not thinking any snow or precip was going to happen at all. Highs for the next sunday were forecast around 55 I do recall. Then we woke up to 6 inches on the ground, and it was a very heavy wet snow. Parts just 50 miles north of us were around 8" total.

I can feel some of the mets still wiping the egg off of their faces with that one since it happened, as it has been mentioned many times in comparing the storm we're about to get to what's happened in the past.

Funny thing is, that usually when snow happens here, it's never in the forecast or models beforehand.

Seeing also as how the rain today has been much more than anticipated and that temps Saturday night and Sunday morning won't have to teeter much for accumulating snows a little further south I wouldn't be surprised at anything now.
