One of those time when I wish I had my camera!!

#1 Postby SacrydDreamz » Mon Feb 23, 2004 1:30 am

Today at about 5:00pm I was fortunate to witness parhelia (sun dogs) on both sides of the sun and the associated 22° halo WITH a cirmcumzenithal arc, an incredibly bright upper tangent arc, and a brilliant horizontal pillar beaming from the northern side which I assume was part of the parhelic circle. I could almost make out a faint sun pillar underneath, but I'm not sure... ALSO, I was able to witness a supralateral arc. It was AMAZING. I REALLY wish I had my camera!! Anyone else ever seen all of theses elements present.. 22° halo, associated parhelia, upper tangent arc, circumzenithal arc, and supralateral arc? I'm thinking it's pretty rare to get all of these components at once. I've seen parhelia here 3 times since November, including today. Also, I got to enjoy lenticular clouds in early January. I like this location :D

You can find some great info and pics here! http://www.sundog.clara.co.uk/atoptics/phenom.htm

Sounds cool, Randy. I don't recall ever seeing "sun dogs", but I am sure it would be quite amazing.

You would need something to view the sun with right? You weren't staring directly at it were you? It sounds really interesting!

Edit - I just saw the picture that shows "sundogs" in your link. I don't think that I've ever seen those before nor the halos.

a halo display like that about 3 times during my 18 years down here in AZ. I've seen the halo and parhelia quite frequently though.
