TORNADO WRAPPED IN SNOW????????

#1 Postby hurricanedude » Mon Mar 08, 2004 3:54 pm

I was reading this mornings newpaper and they mentioned that the Tornado last night in Sunbury NC was wrapped in snow!!!! The Intense storms brought the very cold air aloft to the surface which mixed the rain with snow in a lot of SE VA and NE NC...thats not to surprising I know....but for a short time Sunbury changed to all snow...again not to amazing considering the temps in the upper levels...the thing Ive never heard of is a Tornado event with snow...can you imagine seeing a twister of white coming your way...WAY AWESOME if you ask me

I have GOT to see a link to that story if you can find one for it ... that would be an absolute first that I've ever heard of such an event occurring ...

That would sure be a site to see. I didn't even know that it was possible to have a tornado in snow so I would like to see proof.

High Winds Confused as Tornado?

#5 Postby Anonymous » Mon Mar 08, 2004 5:18 pm

Maybe there was just some confusion? Some thought the high winds were a tornado. Some said it was the worst since Hugo. URL: http://salisburypost.townnews.com/artic ... _storm.txt

yes, we also had one in southern Missouri a few years ago. I believe it was either a F-1 or F-2

Very possible

I believe the situation Monday night was due to an occluded front.. Cool air at the surface ahead of the front..a warm and very unstable layer in the middle...with overrunning cold air aloft. Add a wedge of cold air to the rear giving lift to this mess and you have a hell of a volatile situation capable of producing severe thunderstorms and tornadoes even though surface temps are low. Had surface temps been warm this could have been a major tornado outbreak for northeastern NC and southeastern VA as there was strong vertical windshear.

If I'm not mistaken, that was a tornado that moved into the Divide where snowcover existed and turned the tornado white and moments later, subsequentially dissipated ...
