Major Late-Winter Snowstorm Affecting the Midwest and Northeast..
The effects of a major late-winter storm has shifted eastward today. Yesterday, this storm left as much as 18 inches of snow in parts of Nebraska, Iowa and southeastern South Dakota. This morning, it is snowing across northern Illinois, northern and central Indiana, much of Ohio, into Pennsylvania and New York state. New snow amounts today in the Midwest areas will be 1-3 inches; and that will be the case up into southern Lower Michigan and in southwest Ontario. As of this morning, the storm is centered over eastern Kentucky. By this evening, there will be one storm, or area of low pressure, over northern West Virginia, with the storm near the Virginia coast taking over as the main storm. With this storm track, this transfer of energy in mind, that means the heaviest snowfall over the next 24 hours will be across northern Pennsylvania, up across central and eastern New York, into central New England. In these areas, the storm total will generally be 6-12 inches. South of this heavy snow area, primarily across central Pennsylvania, there will be 3-6 inches. One to three inches can accumulate as far south as western Maryland, and the higher elevations of eastern West Virginia. As for the major Northeast cities, this will be mainly a rain event in Washington, D.C.; mixed precipitation will go over to rain in the city of Philadelphia, but the suburbs to the northwest will pick up 1-3 inches; snow will mix with sleet and rain in New York City, but still leave up to a few inches in the city, more in the northwestern suburbs, less out on Long Island. This will end up being a major snowstorm for Boston, beginning late today, with 6-12 inches by tomorrow.
The next disturbance coming across the upper Midwest will leave 1-3 inches of new snow from easternmost North Dakota, much of Minnesota, into western Wisconsin today into tonight.
No new snow expected out in the West in the next 24 hours.
