For them, no reality show nor romance novel can quite compare to the dazzling love they experience upon receiving their invitations to marriage between cold temperatures and moist air. Soon, out of that most wonderful union, the most precious infants will be born--countless tiny crystals that transform the landscape and everything around into larger-than-life jewels.
Tomorrow, many snow geese will be able to look back fondly on Winter 2003-04. Over the course of the season, snow geese in many parts of North America had much to be thankful for.
• An early December blizzard buried the Northeastern United States under one of the largest early-season snowfalls on record.
• Snow geese in the Pacific Northwest rang in the New Year under swirling flakes and a rich blanket of white.
• The end of January brought the snow geese of the New York's Lake Effect region a treasure of snow that reached more than 80" at Parish.
• Just after mid-February, eastern Canada's snow geese, who stood patiently on guard for their very own snowstorm, saw one of the most severe blizzards on record.
• The end of February even gave the Southeast's often hungry snow geese a feast to savor.
Winter 2004-05 has already kissed the snow geese with their first flakes of snow and sometimes more.
By the eve of Thanksgiving, with the anticipation over winter's main course yet to come rising ever higher, snow geese from Kansas City to Chicago were being fed the tantalizing appetizers from the first fruits of Winter 2004-05's harvest. Earlier, New England's snow geese tasted their first delicacies.
Over the past few weeks, as the snow flakes embraced growing parts of the North American continent, there was much reason for excitement among the snow geese. The way they see it, each snowstorm is paving yet another section of the tracks for the famed Siberian Express. Whose tickets will get punched this year?
Looking farther ahead to the Hanukkah and Christmas holiday season, this year's wish lists include among the following seasons:
1960-61
1963-64
1977-78
1995-96
2002-03
Not being too picky, the snow geese would settle for any one of these seasons.
May the harvest of snowfall prove bountiful for snow geese everywhere.
Have a great Thanksgiving Day holiday!
