Omaha Snow I

#1 Postby senorpepr » Sun Nov 28, 2004 4:16 pm

Well... the first snowfall of the 2004-2005 season is upon us in Omaha.

On my drive home from SE suburbs to the SW suburbs, I encountered increasing snow. The plows are out and the roads aren't too slick. The drivers aren't too slick, either. :(

I'll keep you posted in this thread, as I'm sure AirmaN and NEWeatherGuy will as well.

Anyway...

Here's a webcam from just down the street from me.

Congratulations on the snow. Given the synoptic pattern plus the teleconnections that will prevail this winter, I would not be surprised if you someday post an Omaha Snow 198 thread this winter!!

I hope you have a well-tuned snowblower and a backup snow blower.

You're gonna need 'em. Don't try to shovel it unless you are in super cardio shape, you're going to get hammered all winter long and there will be no appreciable letup.

Have fun and enjoy all the snow, this is only the beginning......

Offutt AFB (SE Omaha) and Eppley (E Omaha) are both reporting 1.5 miles visibility with light snow and light fog. Ceilings are 1100-1400ft. Temperatures are at or just below freezing.

Offutt AFB has reported 0.02" of liquid-converted precip over the past three hours with Eppley reporting a trace.

Millard (W Omaha) has 0.5mi with light snow. Ceilings there are down to 700ft.

Lincoln (approx 45mi SW of Omaha) has 3mi with light snow and light fog.

Thanks!

Luckily I don't have a lot of shovel; just in front of the garage door. The apartment complex is REALLY good at cleaning the parking lot. (Normally 5x a day). I'll have the shovel along, just in case I get snowed upon at work. The crews only clean the major roads on base and spend most of their time cleaning the runway, so I'll have some digging to do if we get too much.

Senorpepr, what is your elevation above mean sea level. Just curious.

Yeah, our elevation helps us out compared to the rest of the metro area. Last winter we had nearly a foot more snow here than at work. Local effects make all the difference.

Eppley now has 0.75mi vis with light snow and light fog. Vertical visibility extends up to 1100ft. Temperature is 30°F.

No changes for Offutt...

Really nothing new to add. The snow was slowed some. Ceilings are now up to around 1500-1700ft. Vis has increased to 1.5-1.75mi. Regardless, day one of our first snow storm was more that what we expected. Local forecasts were only calling for <1" today with more tomorrow. So far we have 2" in Gretna, maybe more. Tonight and tomorrow should be interesting.

The snow continues to slow up. Just a few flakes are flying about. Visibilities around Omaha are around 5-7mi.

Visibilities are back down to around 1-2mi. No new snow totals to report. I'm still getting the worst of it in the hills.
