Healthy cold front on way for Texas

#1 Postby Portastorm » Mon Nov 29, 2004 6:50 am

From our friends in the Houston/Galveston area to the flatlands of Amarillo, looks like Old Man Winter will be paying us a visit in the next 24 hours.

Possible snow/sleet from just northwest of the DFW Metroplex southwest through the Big Country. Amarillo gets more snow. Those of us further south should see a chilly rain. It's 68 here in Austin at 5:30 a.m. but should be closed to 38 tomorrow at this time. Yikes!

I guess the good news is the flooding rains should be less of a threat then they have been lately. Anywhere along I-35 from Waco to San Antonio and east along I-10 to Houston ... we've had plenty of rain to last a while.

Enjoy!

Yep, you got that right!! We've had plenty of rain for a while and we are expecting dropping temps most of tomorrow here in Houston down to a low of 36-38 on Weds. morning. For us that is cold!!! It will be welcome though as fall and cooler temps seem to have been few and far between as opposed to what I am used to. And this is supposed to be cooler and wetter than normal? Here's always hopin' one of those lows riding the Southern Jet is timed just right to overide a polar blast and give us a flake or two!! Won't happen this time though.

You mean I might really get to put up our summer clothes??? Just for a few days anyway???? Most of our winter clothes is still in the attic. I hate putting up the tree and lights in shorts, just dosen't seem right.

Tano, if you are wanting to put out christmas lights in chilly weather, this might be the week for you. Actually Tuesday (tomorrow) would be perfect.

With all the S/w in this pattern. Producing all the snow across Amarilo and other areas of north texas. If the cold air makes it to Eastern and Southeastern Texas later in the winter. Yall could have a lot of snow. All the way down to Houston possibly could see snow this winter. But I am not that sure but we will have to see.

Indeed, the cold front has come!

As I type this, its 38 degrees here in Austin with northwest winds 18-25 mph and spotty rain. Wind chill of 26. Yesterday at this time when I originally posted it was 69 degrees. Wow!

Our friends in the northwestern part of the DFW Metroplex may see some mixed rain/sleet today, according to the Fort Worth WSFO. Amarillo got more snow yesterday as well.

If this is a sign of things to come ... perhaps that much desired Lone Star Snow Event will happen this winter for us southern snow geese!!

We have light rain mixing with sleet and light snow here in the D/FW area, and some reports coming out of Johnson Co. of light freezeing rain.

This is only a tease of what I expect will be a nasty cold winter for N Ceneral TX. :jacket:

Oh, it wasn't much of anything really. Crush some ice, go outside and throw it in the air. That's about the same thing as we saw this morning. ;)

Well its still better than 45 and rain that we are getting here. We have only seen a freeze 4 times this year. and that is it so far.

As a follow-up, NWS has placed us (south central Texas) under our first Freeze Warning for the 2004-2005 winter season. Low temps around 30 here in the city (Austin) and mid 20s out in the Hill Country west of us.

I also saw another posting about a potential winter storm down the pike. Yeah, the GFS looks interesting around Dec. 12th and beyond but we all know how (un)reliable that model is that far out. Worth watching though!

Hey YankeeGirl! I guess you've never seen snow here in Houston. Man oh man - it's the best destruction derby you ever saw in your life. Just make sure you stay home and watch it all unfold on TV instead of up close & personal with all the yahoos on the roads. I'll never forget flying in here from Kansas City in February of 89 having no idea that the entire area was covered in an inch of ice sleet and snow. While my husband did manage to pick me up, I thought my short life was over when he informed me that he had no trouble driving on ICE because he had a 4 wheel drive vehicle....

Yeh, driving in snow was that bad here too. I'm in SE LA near New Orleans. December 22, 1989 was one for the books...
I was 13, too young to really appreciate what it was. I was riding home from my school's Christmas party. The snow kept coming down and covering the roadways. Keep in mind, my cousin is driving a tiny little Dodge Colt sportscar and has ZERO experience driving in snow! To top everything off, I'm wearing a little black micromini -- courtesy of the fact that it was 80 degrees the day before and I was staying at my aunt's.
People were swerving, zig-zagging this way and that...nobody here had ANY experience driving or riding in snow. They don't even SELL snow tires this far south!

Had I been a weather watcher like I am now you can bet your bottom dollar that I would not have been wearing that miniskirt, and instead would've packed something warmer. And the snow stayed on the ground till Christmas...so...yes, we sorta had a White Christmas that year. This far south.
