"ALL Aboard the ARTIC EXPRESS!"

#1 Postby azsnowman » Mon Nov 29, 2004 9:10 pm

"BRRR, BRRRR and TRIPLE BRRRRRRr!" Our "HIGH" for the day here at the house reached a "BALMY" 21° and the forecast LOW temp is SOMEWHERE between -6° to 0°  for tonight, tomorrows high, even WARMER, 29° with an even COLDER temp for tomorrow night....
-10 to -3°, this is, with out a DOUBT, record breaking temps, these temps are indicative of late Jan, early Feb!

OH....btw, I forgot to mention the N-NW WIND we had ALL day too, peak gusts reached 32 MPH, sustained at 18....made for ONE H**LUVA BITTERLY COLD day, also, snow total was a meger 3", not quite the snowfall that was forecast but as with any cut off low, we KNOW it's HARD to predict the EXACT track!

The first number after the time is the actual temp, second # is the dew point!

We have nothing that will give us anything other than keeping it cold. Here in Sierra Vista, I recorded a high of 42F which is the coldest high temperature I have ever recorded at the house since I began keeping records in 1988. We are already well below freezing and we could break my November record of 21F tonight or possibly tomorrow night. Temperatures in the teens are not out of the question. This brings up an
interesting possibility. Because of cold air drainage, the temperatures down by the river are anywhere from 10-15 degrees colder than they are here in town so lows down there could get into the single digits. Last year they had -2F by the river and +8F in Douglas during the big December cold spell. We are at latitude 31.6N at the house but also at 4500+ ft in elevation.

It's 44 here right now, I would not be surprised to see upper 30s at least if the temp keeps dropping at this rate.

You all stay warm out there in Arizona tonight. ;)

As the pattern has been every weekend, it appears there IS another system forming, models aren't quite sure what track this next one will take as evident by the AFD. This is a GREAT pattern, as long as it lasts through the coming winter, this is VERY similar to 1997, one system after another, NEVER saw the ground until late May. I know everyone on the east coast is "Foaming at the mouth" waiting for snow/cold however, bear in mind, we've been in/still are, in a 9 year drought, we need every single snowflake we can get!

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
FXUS65 KFGZ 301040 AFDFGZ AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF 330 AM MST TUE NOV 30 2004 .SYNOPSIS...EXPECT VERY COLD TEMPERATURES THE NEXT FEW NIGHTS AS A COLD AND DRY AIRMASS SITS OVER THE REGION. EXCEPT FOR THE PASSAGE OF A FEW HIGH CLOUDS...SKIES WILL BE MOSTLY CLEAR FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK...WITH DRY CONDITIONS...AND BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES. && .DISCUSSION...A WEAK HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE WILL BE OVER THE SOUTHWEST U.S. TODAY. HOWEVER WITH A COLD AIRMASS AND DRY ATMOS...NIGHTTIME RADIATIONAL COOLING WILL BE STRONG WITH NEAR RECORD LOW TEMPS AT A FEW LOCATIONS. THE STRONG RADIATIONAL COOLING WILL ACT TO STRENGTHEN THE INVERSIONS OVER THE HIGH DESERT REGIONS OF THE LITTLE COLORADO RIVER VALLEY...CHINLE VALLEY AND AROUND PAGE...EXPECT COOL DAYTIME HIGHS. EXPECT A FEW DEGREES OF COOLING ON THURSDAY AS ANOTHER WEAK TROUGH SETTLES INTO THE SOUTHWEST U.S. BRINGING A REINFORCEMENT TO THE COOLER AIR OVER THE AREA. AS FOR THE EXTENDED PERIODS FRIDAY INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK...ANOTHER STRONG WEATHER SYSTEM WILL AFFECT THE SOUTHWESTERN STATES SUNDAY INTO MONDAY. AS FOR MODEL CONSISTENCY DURING THIS TIME PERIOD...THE GFS HAS NOT BEEN GOOD. EARLIER RUNS BROUGHT THE SYSTEM ACROSS ARIZONA ON SUNDAY AS AN OPEN WAVE...LATEST 06Z RUN NOW SHOWS THE SYSTEM AS A CLOSED LOW OFF THE CALIFORNIA COAST. IF THE 06Z SOLUTION VERIFIES...THEN THE PRECIP THAT WE HAVE FOR SUNDAY MAYBE NOT BE RIGHT AND THE WEATHER COULD BE DRY INSTEAD. FOR NOW WE WILL KEEP WITH CURRENT FORECAST AND MAKE CHANGES WHEN NECESSARY OR WHEN MODEL FORECASTS START TO CONVERGE TOWARD A CONSISTENT SOLUTION.

Not to rain (or snow out) on the Easterners parade (including myself), but this building of snowpack in the SW has been exactly what the doctor ordered many years ago, and is finally getting around to being delivered ...
