Ohio Valley snowstorm may mean coldest Christmas ever

#1 Postby PurdueWx80 » Sun Dec 19, 2004 11:47 pm

for the regions that have fresh snowcover. The airmass behind this system will have more snow cover to work with, so it will not be nearly as modified as the current one. The discussion from the Springfield, MO spells this out quite nicely. Tonight's GFS shows Christmas morning temperatures in IN, IL and OH near -15F and actually drops them below -20F by the afternoon/evening in IN. Of course, the coldest temperatures will be wherever winds are lightest and the snowcover is heaviest - wherever these two features overlay, temps will bottom out in the -20 to even -30 range overnight. No model will ever forecast this correctly, you have to use the relatively common knowledge that deep snow + light winds = extreme to record cold temps. This will make for treacherous travel conditions over the last half of the week in the Ohio and mid-MS Valleys. Stay tuned!

Joe Bastardi mentioned this morning that areas with fresh snow in the OV will likely see their coldest Christmas in history, which would outdo 1989 in many areas.

:) It's actually between -20 and -25, but very isolated areas could be as cold as -30, which is pushing all-time records (don't think that will happen though).

UMMM...holy snowshoes!!! An e-mail I got from FOX19 met Rich Apuzzo...you can get information such as this at fox19.com. Then look for the Member Center at top right. It's all free.

Okay, now that I have gotten you all excited, here are the numbers. By Wednesday evening some areas will have 6 inches of snow, and that’s just the beginning. The models are generating more like 10 inches, but I will lean on the conservative side of those numbers. Wednesday night and Thursday the storm will move into eastern Ohio, producing the heaviest snowfall and the possibility of a significant ice storm. To the east of Cincinnati, rain will likely mix with the freezing rain and sleet before changing back to snow on Thursday. Total accumulations will likely exceed 10 inches over southeast Indiana and parts of southwest Ohio, but if enough arctic air wraps in and the moisture is close to what the models are indicating, 15 inches ore more will be possible. The storm will wind down by Thursday evening.

Purdue - please keep us updated on this wx story! We're in town for the holidays but each December 26th, my husband's nieces/nephews all ski in the southern IN area at Perfect North. I just hope temps won't be unbearable for that outing - it's a lot of fun.

I remember 1989...brrrr! It was our first year in our new house and we hosted xmas for my husband's family. In fact his parents came in from Florida and stayed a week with us. His dad was just about frozen! He hates cold wx and snow. We hadn't bought firewood yet, and in his dad walked with a case of duraflame logs one day. He said - we're getting a fire going and keeping one going until I leave! LOL

HAHA - I can't wait to have a fire in my parent's place just north of Louisville - sounds perfect given the weather later this week. I don't remember the cold Christmas of '89, but I think I may have been in Jacksonville, FL for my grandpa's funeral (will have to ask my dad when he died because I can't remember for the life of me). Anyway, looks like we'll both have a white Christmas this year! My family started a Progressive Dinner tradition for Christmas Eve a few years ago, but I've advised them not to even think about it this year. Some of my relatives live out in the Boonies and we'd either get stuck or freeze to death going in and out all day. Sunday will "warm" up a bit, but it should still be extremely cold early in the morning (perhaps still below zero). You'll have to bundle up for that ski trip - have fun!

UGH. How worse can it get.

Frigid cold and zero in the way of snow unless the Lake decides to give it up.
