Old Man Winter has already put an icy grip on all of the central states, and the harsh cold will spread to the Eastern Seaboard by Christmas Eve. The cold is being caused by a huge dip in the jet stream. Whenever that happens this time of year, any bitter air that has been stored in Canada surges into the United States. Across the northern and central states, the cold is appropriately labeled dangerous since frostbite can occur in short order. In the Deep South, where temperatures will be running 20 to 30 degrees below normal, extreme cold is the best description.

The Great Plains and Midwest will have to endure excruciatingly cold weather Thursday. Over a broad area of the north central states, the temperature will never get rise above zero. An even larger area will have temperatures no higher than 10 degrees all day. On the eastern flank of the cold wave, harsh winds will lower Real Feel (tm) temperatures to 20 and 30 below zero.
