Raleigh NC will have rain

#1 Postby storms NC » Tue Jan 18, 2005 2:46 pm

LONG TERM (SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY)...
MODELS CONTINUE TO SHOW STRONG AMPLIFICATION OF A CLIPPER-TYPE WAVE
OUT OF THE NORTHWEST BY SAT. THIS RESULTS IN A LOW PRESSURE CENTER
CROSSING THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS OUT OF THE UPPER TENNESSEE VALLEY
WITH SOME DEVELOPMENT OF A SECONDARY LOW OFF THE COAST BEFORE THE
SYSTEM DEPARTS WELL EAST ON SUNDAY. THE 850 LOW REMAINS WELL NORTH
WITH RAPID MODERATION OF THE THERMAL PROFILE EXPECTED OVER CENTRAL
NC DURING THE EVENT. LAST 3 RUNS OF THE GFS HAVE SHOWN INCREASINGLY
WARMER AIR WITH LATEST THICKNESS SOLIDLY IN THE RAIN CATEGORY DURING
THE MAIN EVENT. ONLY SCENARIOS FOR SNOW BEING SEEN HERE NOW ARE
WITH A MORE RAPID ONSET EARLY SATURDAY BEFORE THE PROFILE WARMS
AND/OR WITH A MORE RAPID INTENSIFICATION OF THE 2NDRY LOW AT THE
COAST ALLOWING COLD AIR INJECTION FROM THE NORTHS SAT NIGHT. FOR
THOSE REASONS...WE KEEP THE MENTION OF SNOW WITH RAIN CHANCES...BUT
SNOW IS LOOKING LESS LIKELY. HIGHS BOTH DAYS 34-42 AND LOWS MID 20S
TO NEAR FREEZING SE.

Yep, this is going to be a close call. Like every storm we get (or don't get) it all comes down to timing. Even if there is no snow, the possibility of freezing rain is still a possibility, unfortunately. Let's see what the models show on Thursday.

I will make a bold move and say that the GFS will start trending back south tomorrow and Thursday. It is driving the storm straight into a big confluence zone. Looks a little bogus.

I want it to trend south a little bit and get stronger. Even if the 18z shows the best situation for my area with snow, a north trend would suck, less cold, more of a major ice situation.
