Snowing in D.C.
Snow from the first clipper has started here in Alexandria. Very small flakes, but coming down at a good rate. Wind whipped powdery snow. Snow is getting harder as I type. 22 degrees.

Lowpressure...you should see a quick shot of snow with this clipper, most likely only a dusting in DC.
Still on track for a decent snow this weekend.
I look for the Northern Shenendoah Valley and Eastern Panhandle of WV to get 6+ inches out of the storm.
Looks to be a mix Fredericksburg South and East.

Snow in DC area
Yes, indeed. You can see the snow through the cameras in the DC area on http://www.trafficland.com . There is a lot of it to the west on I-66, enough apparently to white out some of the cameras. But to the east towards Baltimore and Annapolis, the countryside is bare greenish-brown. No snow there yet. And there so far is no snow in the Richmond area, where I live. Intellicast radar seems to show the snow will last about 2-3 hours and begin in an hour here.

Snow continuing to fall and in fact much harder now than earlier. Everything is covered, probably 1/2 inch on my company trucks. Down to 20 degrees and breezy.

I was just out in it, walking around Capitol Hill and downtown (Macpherson Square). The roads are snow-packed (except for K Street, which is combination snow-packed and slush). Didn't see a hint of roads being treated, and businesses were only just starting to salt the sidewalks.
With all the inauguration road closures going into effect this afternoon, this was already going to be a nasty rush hour--if they don't get the roads treated, and/or it keeps snowing much longer, no one will be getting out of downtown tonight!

Car spun out north of Richmond
http://www.trafficland.com shows a car that apparently spun around and is sitting perpendicularly off the road in the southbound lanes on I-95 at I-64 (the northern one) at the Bryan Park Interchange. Traffic is crunching from 3 lanes to 2 and some traffic is going to the right towards the very shoulder to pass the disabled car to the right. The roads are snow covered except for tire tracks. There is also a slowdown on I-95 north near the other I-95/I-64 interchange. If you are headed south to Richmond or beyond to the south, watch out for this.

Any of you guys remember about maybe 5 years ago in DC where one night, there was no forcast for snow, then just before the evening rush hour it snowed for maybe and hour or so. No more than a dusting, but the roads were never treated because they didn't expect it. Well anyway, the raods became sheets of ice. My normal 30 minute commute took 5 hours! There were school buses that were actually still in route to take kids home at 10pm because of the traffic! Accidents everywhere. I think this is the same scenario.

Clipper total is 1.5 inches here in Woodbridge. It was really entertaining, watching it fall. It was fun to shovel too, all I had to do was use a good stiff broom, the snow was so light and fluffy with some graupel-like snow pellets well mixed in.
Gotta keep an eye on those models for the next 72 hours or so, they're all over the place.

With respect to 5-yrs ago.
The forecast was for flurries. East of DC it began snowing around 3:30 and left a quick 1/4 inch. With temperatures around 25, the snow quickly packed into an icy layer. With rush hour beginning, salt trucks were stuck in traffic and unable to treat the roads.
For all intent and purposes it was an ice event and one I'll never forget.
