Why Are They Replacing The ETA ???

#1 Postby Noreaster_Jer_04 » Fri Jan 28, 2005 1:37 am

I want to know who is in charge of these decisions as this is a bad one, I'm not refering to the ETA being re-named to the NAM either... I've herd that the new WRF model will be replacing the ETA in a few years... This is bad decision the ETA year in and year out has proved to an excelent medium-short range model... I know it has it's flaws (the biggest with this model is that it's always a bit too warm with sotrms), but every model has it's flaws... From what I've seen of the WRF so far, it's done horrible with snowfall accumulations... Do they try to make their job harder ???

While I'm at it, I wanna bring up the decision also to tweak the GFS, apparently they feel that they can fix this model by tweaking how it handles low pressure systems over the Rocky Mts... Are they on crack this model has more serious problems than that, it's physics are simply crap... This is the main model used for forecasting, yet it's a known fact that this model can't handle forecasting...

A) El Nino type patterns unless it's a strong El Nino
B) If the ENSO is neutral
C) If there is split in the jet stream

This is ridiculous as I'd say those three situations account for over half the winter patterns that devlope, this model only does good in a La Nina pattern or the afore mentioned Strong El Nino pattern... this is just crazy
