if ya want Snow in Texas in March go to the Panhandle!

in Amarillo. i moved from pittsburgh pa. 10 yrs. ago to amarillo tx. i thought snow in tx. what? by early november snow started falling and we got about 28 inches that yr. and my ears were popping i dindnt know what was going on but i found out they have an elevation of 3600 ft. almost that of denver which is 5400 ft. above sea level and the average snow in amarillo is 25 inches of yr. it even snowed well in to mid april. . although it warmed up in amarillo more then it did in pittsburgh it snowed later in the yr like well into mid-april but the elevation plays a big role in that. i now live in the dallas ft.worth metro area and we usually see 2 good winter snows events a yr. but it doesnt compare to amarillo.its funny some people in east and southeast tx. who dont know about the weather thinks it rarely snows in tx . just move to amarillo for a yr. if ya live south of waco dont expect any more winter events in march trust me. dallas fort area could see 1 more storm. the big bend out by alpine and marfa and elpaso will see a couple more snows drain in from the newmexico mountains. and the panhandle should see snow into mid-april.Texas is like 5 states in 1. the panhandle,west-big-bend,north, south, and east. the state of texas has seen the biggest temperature differential ever recorded in 1 state when it was 105 degrees in brownsville tx. at the most southern tip of texas and it was 35 degrees with moderate snow falling in amarillo on april27th 1986 believe it or not. trust me i know all about texas weather ever since i got a complete whether shock when i moved to the panhandle of texas 10 yrs. ago and im still learning more..............

And there are more stories that can be told of extreme weather events in this state by others I'm sure.

I can remember as a kid back in the early 80's we had some "True Blue Northers" hit south Texas where it might be in the 80's and as humid as all get out and by 5 PM we were in the low 40's and staring down the barrel of some hard freezes.

Shady, you haven't lived in Texas very long have you? The Dallas FtWorth area does not always get 2-3 snows a year. Now about 30 years ago yes maybe, but not here in the last 10 years or so. We usually get alot of ice and maybe a 3 inch snow once in a while.
I can say that because I have lived all my 40 years here in NTX.
South Texas does not get big snows every year because of gulf mositure. The big one that happened this past Christmas was extremely rare and to tell you how rare it was it had been over 100+++years since it had snowed that much. Not saying that it never snows there but very close to it.
In the Panhandle yes you bet you get snows and many of them but you are looking at the terrain like that of Colorado or the plain states. They get tons of it, but this year they haven't seen much of the white stuff either.
We get more severe storms and tornados than snowstorms or blizzards.
