Too Much Talkin' Tropics?
I figured i'd make a thread to relieve us of the talkin' tropics forum when things get a little crazy!
With that said, think back a ways, and tell us the story of the first time you saw snow! What did it feel like? [Besides cold.] Were you happy to touch it? Or was it icy, melting, and full of mud? No matter how good or bad the experience, tell us!
MY first snow experience came in 1994. In first grade. You can hardly call it snow. We had an "extended recess" for the simple purpose of running around outside in the playground in the snow. Of course, living and growing up in Houston, the most snowfall we ever saw disappeared before it hit the ground...
Then came my ski trip to Taos, New Mexico. This was my first REAL viewing of snow. Vast valleys and mountains covered in it. Absolutely beautiful. And for those that are interesting - i'm absolutely horrible at skiing.
My 3rd and final time was in Houston, on Christmas Eve. Anyone who lives in south Texas remembers how magical that day was.
So there it is. What was YOUR first snow?

Growing up in the New Orleans area, there weren't many opportunities. The first time I saw snow was when I was 3 or 4 back in the mid-70's. But I don't remember that. Next time was in 1989 and I remember that one quite well. I was actually very annoyed to see it. I was working and they sent us home just as everything was icing up. A normally 15 min ride home took me 3 hours that day.

I hardly ever experience snow in Southern California.
But when I was in Dallas, I think in 1995, I saw some snow on the ground after an at most light snow event. But I hardly remember the event.
When I was camping during 6th grade (2 years ago) in the local mountains east of San Diego there was quite a snowstorm while my group was hiking up a mountain. What a day. I slipped in the snow and got all my clothes wet with mud.
Unfortunately, the hiking trip was cut down from one day to half a day. All the rest of the groups had a full day to hike. Not us.
But for good reason: after our group came back to the cafeteria, the snow really started to come down and visibility dropped to nearly zero. Later that afternoon we threw some snowballs and the next morning (I think) I woke up to see even more snow on the ground.

Much like Kristi, I too lived in Kansas City for a majority of my life, so I've seen snow at an early age. As a matter of fact, I can only say that one year I did not see snow fall: the winter of 2000-2001. I was stationed at Biloxi at that time and being a short distance from the GOM, the chances of snow were very low. However, I did see snow already on the ground when I came back home to Missouri for winter break.
Now, for the most snow I've seen: that was the winter of 2003-2004 -- my first winter in Nebraska. I lived outside of the city and after several powerful storm systems within a few weeks... we had nearly over 2 1/2 feet on the ground... without drifting. With drifting, it was more like 8-12 feet.

Don't remember it...frankly after seeing 127" of it pile up in Montague over a four day period I forgot about my first time seeing it fall.
NY East of Lake Ontario is one of the best places in the country to see heavy snows if you are lucky enough to visit during a LES storm. Unfortunately this past winter was probably my last here in Watertown, as I will be moving to North Carolina (at least for a couple years) within the next couple of weeks...

The first "big" snowstorm I remember in Seattle was Dec. 1990...the infamous arctic outbreak. Afternoon high temperatures struggled to hit 20F and overnight lows were close to 0F...THAT'S BRUTAL FOR SEATTLE! As for snowfall, there was a snow squall...due to the PSCZ...that formed and dumped almost 14 inches of the stuff. I remember the snow hit right when the school buses were taking us home. Our bus got stuck in the snow so the bus driver flagged down a snowplow and they took us back to school. Since the weather conditions were so bad, they opened up the local high school as a shelter in case parents could not come to pick up their children...at this point the school district was not offering any more transportation. This happened on December 18...school was closed the 19, 20 and 21...we had snow on Xmas day with a high temperature of 27F and we had another arctic outbreak just after the new year. Our winter vacation was extended...instead of December 22 thru January 2...it was something like December 18 thru January 5. So the period from December 18, 1990 to January 5, 1991 was AWESOME for winter weather in Seattle, WA.

I don't remember . . . lived in Minnesota most of my life, so there was always snow (well, seems like it!).
What I do remember is my children's faces when they first saw snow - what , confusion, and then wonderment when they understood that it was nothing scary LOL. Even last year, when they were 11 and 5, the first snow was exciting to them . . . . even if all I could think of was shoveling <g>

The Memphis Blizzard
My Dad was a meteorologist at Memphis International Airport in 1967 or 68, I was just a kid, and he predicted a heavy snowfall, and we had 16 inches of snow. I remember being absolutely petrified of the stuff. Stamped out a 2 foot square spot before finally getting up the guts to plunge in and walk in it. That was when I fell in love with snow. I couldn't have been over four years old.

Well I was born and raised here in Fla., but when I was 5 my family moved to Alabama for 3 years. My dad was a golf pro and had an opportunity to teach at a golf corse there. One of the winters there was a great one for snowfall. Don't remeber the exact day, but I do remeber getting a piece of plexi glass and riding it down the hill of the 18th fairway, it was a huge hill going between 2 lakes down to the green. And also was fastinated with the drifts of snow against the house. It was fun as a kid. It has now been about 26 years since I have saw any. I would really like to take my 7 year old twins to see some snow, maybe go to the mountains. I think they are old enough to where they would remeber it. My little one is only 3 though so we may wait a few more years to go. But when the time comes I may be asking some of you the best places to go. But I think everyone should experience snow at least once in their life and remeber it.

I was born in February in Cincinnati, Ohio. The first time I saw snow was probably upon leaving the hospital.
I hated having a winter birthday, because more often then not, any party was snowed out. Of course, the good news was I was often on a snow day for my birthday.
I go home every Christmas, and a few weeks is more then enough to make me happy to head home to the tropics.
Of course, I do play in it at least once.
