Ahh, the good ol reliable long-range GFS. ;) Sarcasm aside, I hope it pans out, but I don't trust it beyond 3-4 days.

based on this projection...(at the time posted, forecast for 12z Nov 24)

coldest air in ND with lows -10 and highs 10 above

for Houston, November 24 will probably the coldest day out of the blast with lows down to 40 and highs in the 60s

Looks like it is time to call for a spot market heating oil delivery.

Welcome to Storm2K, Don! :D Enjoy yourself here! :)

Well, for NC (the state where I live) Grandfather Mountain or Mt. Mitchell are 2 great areas for a winter getaway! :D

Thanks Eric...

I checked it out on the net, but I'm not sure that this area will have snow during Christmas..

I was looking for somewhere with a high percentage of falling or lying snow. Maybe something around the Great Lakes..or NE.

Yep, probably just man-made snow at some of those NC ski resorts if you and your folks enjoy skiing as part of your Christmas vacation.

Upstate New York, east of Lake Ontario. If you get lucky, you will see snow as you have never seen it before...

Help me here - it's interesting to see how the maps have changed since the original Nov. 8 post date. Am I seeing the first Gulf winter storm of the year forming and riding up the east coast?

The Canaan Vally area of West Virginia is usually a reliable place to get snow in late December.

ditto!

well the maps will change just because they will always be a certain amount of hours from the time they were issued, but your right that the forecast has been changing around some. the original big winter blast that the GFS was showing isnt really in the forecast anymore however now its more of an ease into winter with the GFS showing the northeast region over into the midwest in a 100% winter senario through the end of the month.

I think the Northeast is going to get into the winter pattern by next weekend and by what the long range GFS model is showing. we may have highs in the 20s and lows in the single digits for the rest of November.

the GFS long-range is indicating a storm moving through the Mid- Atlantic region and then moving northward through New England on November 26th. temperatures for that storm should be just around freezing...
behind this storm temperatures will take a huge fall and the GFS is showing temperatures in the 20s and 30s down as far south as the Florida Panhandle.

Then the GFS does begin to show some energy coming north from the GOM... how close to New England it tracks will determine how much snow... (as usual)

here's the link btw http://www.arl.noaa.gov/ready/animations.html

well if you're willing to head that far north, I would second NY. awesome lake effect snows!

for a shorter trip, anywhere along the Appalachian Mts should give you a good dose of snow.

Actually, isn't there some survey that tells which places are likely to have a white Christmas?

I'll second the mountains of the Apps if you want to stay close to home...also, besides upstate NY you could check out the mountains around VT and MA...or if you are driving, you could check out all three areas.

And that's why I mentioned Grandfather Mountain and/or Mt. Mitchell for ie. earlier today, too. :)
