Lake effect pictures now added

#1 Postby mcw » Wed Nov 16, 2005 9:29 pm

Nothern Lower Michigan is feeling the effects of the latest bombing low pressure system. Some areas have been without power since Sunday, as storm force gusts took down power lines. Tonight, snowfall rates of 1"/hr. are occuring in favored snowbelt regions. The winds are currently from the west, limiting fetch to 80 mi or so, but have just begun to turn NW. This often creates a double fetch, with the snow bands developing over Lake Superior, crossing the Upper Peninsula, and gaining additional energy from Lake Michigan. Here in Leelanau County, (leftmost county under the heaviest band) I am guessing 2" in the last two hours. The NW wind turn can be seen on the immediate Lake MI shoreline below the two islands, the band is just starting to develop to the SE of the existing one.

The zone forecast this morning called for 3-5 in. We are now under a winter storm warning, could be up to 9 in. by daybreak depending where the bands line up, some minor additional to fall before noon tomorrow. Glad I checked to see if the snowblower would start today!

Interesting stuff. LES machine is kicking up in upstate NY as well, 6+ inches expected, but as a fellow snowbelt resident you know that is next to nothing... :P

Power back on

#3 Postby mcw » Thu Nov 17, 2005 8:27 am

Hi nystate! How are you faring? After posting the radar image above, the power went out AGAIN here. Guesstimate 8 in. heavy and wet snow so far, still under winter storm warnings, still snowing. No co-op reports yet from NWS, so that's the best I have for now.

No snow on the ground at 3 p.m. yesterday and it hasn't been cold enough yet for the ground to freeze. Usually the first snowfall is a couple of inches and it melts off quickly. This one might stay looking at the forecast. I will post a couple of photos later.

How much snow?

#5 Postby mcw » Thu Nov 17, 2005 12:08 pm

Co-op obs within 2 mi. of me reports 10.8 in. and still snowing. Traverse City 11 in., Kalkaska 14 in.

This is not an unusual daily amount here from December until the lake freezes. It is atypical for mid-November. Firearm deer season starts Nov. 15 in MI and many hunters hope for "tracking snow", an inch or two. Close to a foot is a different story!
