Those of us in Texas know that we've been in a drought for months now. In fact, 2005 is set to be the 5th driest all-time for DFW. My question is, why has it been so dry? We get cold fronts, but there's always little-to-no moisture for rain. What is going on to prevent the moisture return and keeping us so dry? We really need it to break and for Spring to be wet or 2006 could be a tinder-box.
(Perhaps not the correct forum, but I know a lot of posters from Texas visit this board.)

Yep, dry down here. We have some rain but comes like an inch or two at one time and then the faucet gets turned off for 2 months with nothing but dew in between. We all want cold weather and stuff, but a consecutive or prolonged freezes could really dry things out and make for a bad wild fire situation .
I hope people using fireworks will think twice this New Years Eve.

Where do I find exactly how far behind my area is for the year? I've seen a map, but it just shows "below normal" for precipitation for the entire state.
I don't know about where you guys are, but here it seems there's just less times that it rains, but often when it rains, it POURS. Wasn't it just last week that we were posting about severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings along with heavy rain? I know my yard was a lake! Not quite as much, but a few weeks before that, another episode of rain all day, but *most* of it was light. And of course Rita brought a ton of rain at once. But supposedly, we're still behind here...I guess it's just longer periods between rain events.

I think in a drought situation fireworks should not be sold. I think there should be a law against it. It gets me that they can sell fireworks even when a burn ban is in place...people are not going to follow the law.
My dad was a fireman and I feel for all the volunteer depts. out there when we allow fireworks to be sold during a burn ban.
People are not going to follow the ban when it comes to fireworks. Lots of kids and teens will just go out in the county and set them off and run. They don't realize what damage they can do with one little fireworks. Think about the pastures for livestock, the homes nearby or even the lives they put at risk with setting off fireworks in the midst of a severe drought.
I don't know if many of you know it but up north of DFW there has been an arsonist setting pastures on fire the past few months. Its hard to catch someone like that in such a wide rural area.
