Ohio: Not a very interesting cold spell or more to come?

#1 Postby Gord_on_snow » Wed Feb 08, 2006 2:29 pm

Now, before i begin, i'm still learning lots about the weather here so when i post things like this, the intention is to help me to learn. Also, i know parts of Ohio are seeing decent winter weather so this may not apply to all.

From what i can tell, and i am one who can fall into the trap of looking too far ahead, this cold spell really isn't turning out to be that great. Now to be fair, no-one really suggested it would be for here. Temperatures have been cold...but not really cold, colder air at the weekend really isn't that much colder according to forecasts. And as for snow, well, its not really been too good and the forecast isn't too good either. Added to the fact that forecasts hint that we will be back into the 40's by this time next week.

Like i said, all that was promised was that it would feel different to January, and overall that has been correct so in that respect i am probably being very unfair . But our lowest temp of 2006 so far still stands at 21F and that was mid-January. Our greatest snow depth still stands for a date in January. If the forecasts pan out the way they do, (and they never do!), then this might just add to the disappointment of January rather than relieve it.

But, on the positive side...it has been a lot colder, theres still a lot that can happen and most of all...i always miss lots when looking at charts and forecasts cos i'm still not good at it. My inability to interpret information has helped me before!

Really like to know what other people in Ohio and the Ohio valley think.

OK, i am really confused.

NWS are suggesting a return to zonal conditions next week. Accuweather headlines all say cold will stay around next week and beyond...yet their actual forecast for here also suggests a return to zonal conditions.

I really am confused.

I really do not understand. Of course, the last thing i want is for it to turn zonal again but i'm getting some really conflicting messages here.

Anyone willing to help me out on this cos i'm completly lost now! :P

Maybe i should just forget about the lot and look forward to Spring when we can have day trips out of the city!

The Accuweather headlines are much different and much more accurate than the actual Accuweather forecasts for specific areas.

Really not turning out to be that good a month so far here in Columbus.

Near miss number 2 this weekend. Edge of that low pressure too far east for Columbus...heavy snow showers to the west and not coming this way. I think we're the only city in Ohio that hasn't seen a flake fall all day. Caught inbetween it all...again! Missed out on a good storm accumulation last weekend thanks to all that heavy rain. Missed out this weekend thanks to simply being in the wrong place so the snow cant quite get to us!

Maybe 3rd time lucky...if there is another time!

I'm quite good at not getting upset when the weather doesn't work out how i'd like it...but i have to admit its getting a little silly now! Surely one location cant get much more bad luck...can it?!

I've pretty much given up on this winter. Winter 06-07 might bring more decent snowfall. But here in Cincinnati we're almost past the chance for a good snowfall. Even if we get one, it will likely melt right away. My daughter wants just one more snowday and since I work for the school district now, a free day wouldn't be so bad!

Friday night into Saturday we had our hopes up but before the storm even intensified, our storm advisory was cancelled. That fast, by 3 or 4 p.m. Friday we knew it was going south.

I've said for years now, Kentucky seems to get more measurable snowfall than Cincinnati does!

You could still get snow. Cold temperatures and an active storm pattern are supposed to hang around for the rest of the month.

A cold pattern and active storm pattern is great...but its no good for us if those storms keep missing us each time...or they dump heavy rain first so the ground is too wet.

What is upsetting me is the fact that this is my 2nd and last winter in the USA and my last and i wont get another chance to see another US winter.

By my standards, my first winter here (04/05) was pretty good. OK, there wasn't any big falls of snow but having snow on the ground for nearly a month and experiencing bitter cold temps was new to me. The only thing i haven't had from my time in the US now is a big fall of snow. And time is running out fast!

I've got to hope for snowy and cold winters back in England from now...and believe me, that is a very bleak outlook!
