Wow. How often does that happen (below freezing temps at night) this far south? I mean is it an annual thing, or a once every so many years or even decades thing?

in south Florida though a freeze in not annual. Down in the Miami area...a freeze is pretty rare.

A freeze in areas near the coast is of historical magnitude, but inland it happens nearly annually.

*off topic*, but it looks like it is even going to be chilly in key west! The high tomorrow is only 63 down there with rain and tomorrow night it should be 49-50F with rain as well. Not that perfect beach day many would expect this time of the year down there. ALSO winds will be gusting over 25mph during the day and the night.

The interior section of S. FL especially the Glades can quite often be as much as 10 degrees colder than coast.....

Unusual for freezed to the coastal sections, but it has happened.....

In particular I remember Christmas Eve/Day 1989......28 degrees or so and had a lot of foliage that burned and had to be cut back......Actually set a record for lowest maximum for the day...Xmas Eve we topped out at
45 degrees in Ft. Laud...

That would be the time we had a couple of inches of ice followed by a couple inches of snow up here in NE Florida.

White Christmas. :)

here's a small pic of what it was like:
