Middle TN Storm Summary

#1 Postby JenyEliza » Sat Feb 11, 2006 8:33 pm

Thought this would be of interest to our friends up in Middle TN:

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT

...SNOWFALL REPORTS FROM AROUND THE MID STATE...

LIGHT SNOW CONTINUES OVER PORTIONS OF THE EASTERN COUNTIES OF THE MID STATE THIS MORNING. A SNOW ADVISORY EXPIRES AT NOON TODAY FOR THE CUMBERLAND PLATEAU REGION. SNOWFALL DEPTH REPORTS OF 3.5 INCHES TO 4.5 INCHES HAVE BEEN RECEIVED FROM THE NORTHERN CUMBERLAND PLATEAU COUNTIES WITH 2 INCHES BEING REPORTED IN THE SOUTHERN PLATEAU COUNTIES. IN THE WESTERN COUNTIES OF THE MID STATE 2 INCHES WAS REPORTED IN THE NORTHERN COUNTIES WITH 1 INCH ACCUMULATIONS IN THE SOUTHERN COUNTIES. RUTHERFORD AND BEDFORD COUNTIES REPORTED 2 INCHES IN SOME LOCATIONS...WITH PORTLAND IN SUMNER COUNTY RECORDING 3 INCHES.

HOWEVER...LAST NIGHT...TO THE SOUTH OF PORTLAND ALONG INTERSTATE 65 A VERY SHALLOW LAYER OF WARM AIR DEVELOP AND REMAINED STATIONARY FOR MOST OF THE NIGHT. THE WARMER AIR WAS ALONG AN EAST OF AN INVERTED TROUGH THAT EXTENDED FROM THE SURFACE LOW TO THE SOUTH. IN THIS REGION PRECIPITATION WAS MOSTLY RAIN WITH SOME SNOW MIXED IN.

LAST NIGHT...AN OBSERVATION IN NASHVILLE SHOWED SNOW FALLING JUST ABOVE THE SURFACE...BUT CHANGED TO RAIN IN THE WARMER AIR NEAR THE SURFACE.

I guess the blue part above explains what happened to our Nashville S2Kers. :(

JenyEliza, people in Nashville were soooo disappointed! It seems that a warmer
burst of air broke lose and came of from the south and melted their snow.
I live about 65 miles southwest of Nashville - we got a good inch, which was
beautiful to look at while sipping my morning coffee, and, quickly melted by
noon. Another round of snow showers, tonight, has already laid another inch
on the ground, and, the radar shows more snow due, about an hour north
of here. It looks like Nashville may actually get some accumulation, as well,
with these scattered bands of snow showers in middle Tennessee.

I can imagine the people (especially kids) in Nashville were really heartbroken. Such a buildup for a great storm--after several winters without any measurable snow, only to have cold winter rain, while everyone around you gets snow would just be devastating.

I sure hope they get some accumulation tonight. They definitely deserve it.

Down here in NGA, some of our counties are reporting snow from the bands that are developing in Middle TN and moving southeast. I haven't seen any snow yet...but I'm sure hoping to catch at least one little snow shower before it's over.

Enjoy your snow! :D

That would be so cool if you could do that, but that just isn't how it works, is it? ;) :(
