With the Presidents Day storms was my vote, though most certainly a little higher.
And speaking of classifying storms, I happened across this story recently about NOAA will now be rating Nor'easters on a scale similar to the SS scale in terms of having categories, and classifications will be available a couple of days after a storm strikes.
For the complete story and a description of the scale,

I'm not far from you and it wasnt crippling but it was close to it

The Blizzard of 2005, this was walk in the park compared to the 1978, PDII, 1996, and 1993 storms. 1978 just stalled off the coast of New England causing massive coastal flooding as well. Although I'd say this one has a more vast region affected by >12" snows, though the highest snowfall total I've heard was about 28", a far cry from the 38" during the Blizzard of 2005. If I knew more about the Carolina Crusher and the Millenium Storm then I could vote for that. The thing is that in some ways this storm was a bluff, a heavy mesoscale band just happened to set up over a populated area. The March 2001 storm had 40" snows over rural areas away from the coast and it was considered "overhyped". All about location.
I think the closest comparison to this storm would be the Feb. 1983 storm which ironically occurred 23 years ago to the date, and also followed an exceptional warm spell over much of the country.

I said if the forecast panned out it would be a storm of historic proportions, and several others here said the same.
I think what people will most remember about this storm is how it only really started to show up on the models a couple of days before it hit. In light of this fact, I think the 'Surprise Storm' would be a better name than the Blizzard of 2006, but that is just me.

Storms of similar magnitude are never going to effect us today the way they did ...lets say back in 1978. We are better prepared and we have more equipment. A good deal of the road crews are now driving around in their trucks prior to the arrival of the storm these days.
I had friends on road crews in Mongomery County MD back then and they were gettig called in after the snow had already begun falling. Things are different now. More confidence in forecasting equals more confidence in shelling out taxpayer dollars in advance. So road crew are now brought in before hand in most major cities.

however it would be on the low end of it because 1978 I hear was just unreal and 2003 was worse in my opinion (I was in it too so I can testify to it)
Not even close to 78.

Hurricane Floyd,
The earlier President's Day storm was in 1979 and not 1978.
