AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
215 PM CST SAT APR 1 2006

THE AREA WILL START OUT APRIL WITH UNSEASONABLY WARM
TEMPERATURES. BOTH RECORD HIGHS AND RECORD HIGH MINS MIGHT BE
WITHIN REACH AT A COUPLE LOCATIONS THIS WEEKEND. WE COULD SEE A
SHOWER OR TWO DEVELOP TODAY...BUT CHANCES LOOK A LITTLE BETTER
TOMORROW (ESPECIALLY UP NORTH) AS A SHORTWAVE MOVES ACROSS THE
AREA. WHILE SOME SEVERE WEATHER SEEMS LIKELY WELL TO OUR NORTH
(NORTHEAST TEXAS TOWARD IOWA-MISSOURI-ILLINOIS AREA)...SPC HAS THE
VERY SOUTHERN TIP OF THEIR DAY 2 SLIGHT RISK AREA BRUSHING OUR
NORTHERN COUNTIES. WE SHALL SEE. MODELS HAVE CHANGED THEIR MINDS
ON MONDAY AS THEY BRING A STRONG COLD FRONT INTO OUR AREA (PREVIOUS RUNS
KEPT THIS BOUNDARY TO OUR NORTH). A BUILDING NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT
SUPPORTS THIS NEW FRONTAL MOVEMENT AND HAVE GONE ALONG WITH THIS
SCENARIO. THIS HAS RESULTED IN MUCH LOWER TEMPERATURES FOR
PORTIONS OF OUR AREA MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY AND A FREEZE
IS LIKELY AREAWIDE ON MONDAY NIGHT. OUR THINKING RIGHT NOW IS
THAT UPPER 20S ARE POSSIBLE NORTH OF I-10 AND LOWER 30S ARE
POSSIBLE SOUTH OF I-10. IF WE DO HIT THESE LOWS, THEY WILL BE WITHIN RANGE
OF THE COLDEST EVER APRIL READINGS AT BOTH IAH AND HOBBY.
FOR THIS
FORECAST PACKAGE... HAVE STUCK
PRETTY CLOSE TO THE GFS SOLUTION WHICH BRINGS THE FRONT BACK NORTH
ON TUESDAY/TUESDAY NIGHT. A STRENGTHENING ONSHORE FLOW FOR THE
SECOND HALF OF THE WEEK WILL BRING UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES
BACK TO THE AREA. A DEVELOPING SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT AND THE
APPROACH OF THE NEXT UPPER LEVEL TROUGH SPELLS INCREASING RAIN
CHANCES AFTER WEDNESDAY. WILL KEEP POPS ON THE LOW SIDE FOR NOW AS
MUCH OF THE ENERGY WITH THIS SYSTEM LOOKS TO REMAIN WELL NORTH OF
SOUTHEAST TEXAS. LOOKS LIKE GALVESTON JUST EXPERIENCED ITS 7TH
WARMEST MARCH ON RECORD. 42

Great.. Just when it was starting to get spring like...a late season freeze has to come along and ruin everything. It is weird to think that the coldest ever lows for April may be on the way though. The bad news is that all of this new growth is going to be wiped out! Guess it is time to go and pull out the coat again..

BTW, here is the text forecast for Spring, TX (NW Houston):

Sunday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low near 62. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm.

Monday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a high near 62. Calm wind becoming northeast around 15 mph.

Monday Night: clear and cold, with a low around 28.

Tuesday: Partly cloudy, with a high around 55.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 33.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 72.
