The Most Disappointing Winter

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Sat Dec 23, 2006 12:02 pm

What year(s) do you think have the Most Disappointing Winter(s)?

Here in North Texas, I think 2005 is the most disappointing, because all we got was freezing drizzle...and that's it; but it was enough to cause some traffic tie-ups.

I understand, but the question was the "most disappointing winter" - we're only 2 days into this winter. lol
He was just picking on you.

2005-2006 of course, only a few flurries once, no real cold air at all.

All of the recent years, since 2001-2002. Had 4 small accumulation snow events in 2000-2001.

Very disappointing. I had about 0.000000000000001" of snow last year, which was more than the previous 3 winters combined.

The biggest single letdown by far was Christmas 2004, when South Texas got snow and we did not. :grr:

Every winter except part of 2000 has been a disappointment for me.

We haven't had any real cold snaps since 1996 as far as I can remember besides that ONE in 2000.

Heck, even in the 80s we had some real nice winters, but nothing now.

Global warming indeed.

just goes to show that it is all relative. Denver has had a strong of low snow bad winters in the past 10 years. In fact, in only one of the past 10 years has Denver gotten its average snowfall of 60...many of the years it was under half the normal. The only year that they did hit 60'' was 2003 and they were about half of normal until the blizzard of 03 dumped 3 ft...which brought them to the average.

This year we had a very snow october, not much in November and then some good snows in early December and now the blizzard with another good storm knocking on the door Thursday. People in Denver seem to have forgotten what it is like to have a good winter.

Global averages aren't relative though.

For me it was the winter of 2004-2005. It wasn't just the fact that it was far below average here in Salt Lake City (just 29 or so inches), it was the fact that everyone else around us got snow. The mountains saw one of its snowiest winters on record (with close to 800 inches at Alta), while in early January a huge storm hit Utah. It was a fairly warm storm for that time of year, and while it brought rain here, it was just cold enough to drop snow in the Cache Valley (slightly higher in elevation and about 100 miles to the north)...which saw a phenomenal 2-4 feet! This was also the same winter that Reno got 3 feet in one storm. Meanwhile, here we received a measly 2 and a half feet of snow throughout the whole winter (compared to the normal 5 feet). :grr:  :grr: :x

A lot spring to mind here in the Uk, we just dont seem to get decent winter's here anymore. Some localities can get good events, (i used to live in the north east of England and we used to get some good dumpings from north sea showers...they worked just like Lake Effect snow)

2006/2007 is off to an appalling start over here and no sign of any improvement, even those localities with better chances are looking poor.

1997/98 springs to mind for me, i lived on the north sea coast at the time i don't remember any lying snow that winter.

As for the 2 years i spent living in Ohio. 2004/2005 was OK, as a Brit it bought some new experiences (I had never seen snow on the ground for more than a week or had felt anything under 15F until that winter). 2005/2006 was awful though. I would expect dissapointment like that in the UK, but to get that in Ohio when really i should expect something far better than the British rubbish really was very dissapointing. By all accounts, some parts of England got far more snow than Columbus, Ohio did last winter...talk about right place at the wrong time!

So far this December... Toronto has only seen 0.6cm of snow (at the Airport). The least snowiest December on record is December 1943 when 4.8cm of snow fell...so we are probably gonna break the record for least snowiest December.

Another amazing stat: all but 2 days in December 2006 (up to today the 28th) has seen temperatures over 0C 32F as highs.. the only 2 days that failed to hit 0C were 4th and 8th December... and just barely too.

Only 13 days so far this month have been sub-freezing at night. Another amazing stat.

So October had a trace of snow, November had a trace of snow, and December has had just 0.6cm of snow. If you are wanting snow... don't come here, it just ain't happening.

This one so far. I was thinking it was going to be a rough winter but nope, mother nature wants to shove yet another crappy winter for parts of Ontario. This is like the 3rd or 4th year in a row we have had a warm, crappy winter. It was a green Christmas with very little snowfall for December. In fact, I think we had much more snow in November and early December.
