Midwest Icestorm 12/8-12/11

#1 Postby Pebbles » Sat Dec 08, 2007 5:29 pm

What a long lasting event! Have at least 3 hour roundtrip drive (on good days) tomorrow to NIU. Hoping we dodge the ice bullet as we have 52 families and coaches traveling this weekend to a kids sports meet. I feel pain for those south and southeast of me though who are really getting hammered this weekend. Hang in there.

P.S. If any pro's care to chime in on thoughts on road conditions for I80, I355, and 88 between Orland/Joliet to Dekelb IL for Sunday would be appriciated as I am sharing this info with other parents.

This looks like a pretty significant event brewing...I've heard that I-40 is already closed in Missouri...

I-40 does not run thru MO; however, I-44 does. There are no highway closures due to the weather. I just checked MODOT's website.

Looks like my group is getting lucky in not getting the main batch of huge ice (though we are about as close as you can get for a miss) WHEW. Feel really bad for those getting hit by this first round. Looks just aweful bad.

Wow, Ice Storm Warnings from Oklahoma to Detroit. They're forecasting up to and possibly over a solid inch of ice accumulations in my area (eastern Missouri) by the time this is all over on Wednesday. Good LORD that's a ton of ice. The power line damage is going to be insane.

Time to whip out the kerosene heater!

The major ice accumulations are to my south and east. Looks like a swath from Columbia MO to Pittsburg KS has terrible road conditions and power outages. Our turn comes tomorrow night thru Tues. afternoon when we could receive up to an inch of ice.

I am soon to be in on the ice as well. We have been hovering at 34 all night and in the last hour we have dropped to 32.5... just a matter of time. We just went under an ice storm warning. Fun times... not!

Yeah.. Chicago land is now under a winter storm watch for monday night into tue for possible ice storm. All I have to say is 1/2 and inch fell in chi-town... things would get UUUUGLY in the windy city. I don't think peeps really know how to handle it in the city.

Hi Garrett,
You still have power? We have not had much up here in the metro KC area. Our turn is coming tonight (Monday night). There's a great blog hosted by the Channel 41 weather team here in KC. I am a pretty active participant in it.

Things are pretty terrible in southern Missouri, Gov. Blunt has declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard. It looks like a good chunk of northern and western Missouri is going to get its turn at major accumulations tonight into Tuesday. Fun times for Missouri.

I just hope it doesn't turn out as bad as 2003

Metro KC area is under an ice storm warning from 6 PM this evening until Tuesday midnight. We can expect ice accumulations of 1/2" to 1" inch or more.

I know we haven't had the same sustained event like we did a few years back, but I HATE ICE STORMS! :cold: :cold: :cold: :cold:

I guess if it gets significant, I can play the same game I did last time. "Who Wants To Lose Their Electricity?" I didn't lose it during the last one, but boy did I try to. Just about everything around me lost power, except my little complex. It was weird to see the Home Depot without any power. I liked the irony on that one. The guys jacking up the price of generators didn't even have one for themselves to run their store.

holy cow that bulletin out of Tulsa is just aweful!

On the home front LOT has only issued an ice advisory for Chicago and southern counties (with ice warnings in their NW counties) while the HPC has issued what's below. I don't know which one to believe as those are 2 totally different pictures. My husband is management with a trucking company so he asks me to keep him updated with the weather as this greatly effects his workers and how he sets things up. Right now I'm shrugging my shoulders not knowing what's going to happen.
