Birmingham forecast discussion

#1 Postby AL Chili Pepper » Wed Dec 19, 2007 7:00 pm

Mentions the s-word on Christmas Day. They seem pessimistic, and probably rightfully so, but I thought it was interesting.

NOW THE BIG...DON`T LOOK NOW...PART OF THE FORECAST. OPERATIONAL
GFS AND EURO BRING IMPRESSIVE BOWLING BALL ACROSS THE SOUTHERN
TIER MONDAY AND INTO CHRISTMAS DAY...WITH COLD AIR AND ALL THAT IT
IMPLIES IN TACT. FOR NOW THOUGH...HAVE SERIOUS DOUBTS TO THIS
SOLUTION. FIRST THING...THIS IS THE FIRST RUN TO REALLY SHOW SUCH
A DEEP SYSTEM. SECOND...THE SOLUTION IS NOT SUPPORTED BY NEITHER
THE ENSEMBLE MEMBERS...NOR THE MEAN. IN FACT...OPERATIONAL GFS
APPEARS TO BE AN OUTLIER. WE WILL HAVE SEVERAL MORE RUNS TO
REVISIT THIS SOLUTION BEFORE WE WILL START SELLING ANY STOCK IN
CHRISTMAS DAY SNOW.
WILL STICK WITH A BLEND OF CONTINUITY AND HPC
MANUAL PROGS...ALSO NOTING HPC STRESSING CONSISTENCY PROBLEMS IN
PMDEPD PRODUCT. BUT STILL...I WOULD STAY TUNED ON THIS ONE.

I'm leaning more towards a Wet Christmas than White... We do need the rain though.

NWS here in Charlotte mentioning a potential Christmas day snow as well. Not willing to jump on it yet either.

This is typically the most productive set-up for snow in the Western North Carolina mountains. It would be quite ironic if we had a white Christmas after such a warm, dry year.
