When the ECMWF talks forecasters listen, so it was exciting to see the 00 UT ECMWF showing a full-blown Miller A noreaster for the 26th and 27th of December. The 12 UT ECMWF backed off on the big-storm idea but still had a significant low off the DelMarva Coast on the 26th. Rather then hugging the coast this latter run sent it rapidly northeast. The ECMWF has some skill 7 days out so we can't dismiss this out of hand.
The 00 UT run of the Canadian model GGEM also shows a big storm but delays it a day until the 27/28th.
The latest GFS run starts with a northern Gulf of Mexico low but the storm seems to shear out as it heads northeast bring a "boring" run-of-the-mill wintry mix to much of the northeast.
The HPC forecasters note that the storm doesn't have much support in the ensembles but speculate that resolution may matter in this case.

I wonder why we don't do Boxing Day. I guess because, unlike the rest of the English speaking world, class distinctions and giving gifts to servants just isn't a priority for most Americans.

The ECMWF and most other operational models continue to show a storm but keep the interesting stuff well off shore. Some rain in the south then off the coast.
The GFS' solution varies greatly from run-to-run. The 06 UT run shows the storm brushing the mid-Atlantic before heading east. The 12 UT run shows mostly rain and an inland solution.

I always wondered why too...but anyway, it's definitely white here (normally is, the chance of a White Christmas here is 91% - 49 out of 54 since 1954).
The only Christmases with no snow here were 1957, 1979, 1982, 1999 and 2006, and the Christmas with the most snow was 1989 (nearly 3 feet on the ground).
Record high on Christmas: 61 (1982), record low on Christmas: -42 (1993)

Enough snow to dust the car and my palm trees on Christmas Eve, 2004. Was a White Christmas in Corpus Christi, Victoria and Brownsville, on the Mexican border.
Wonder if NYC has had a White Christmas in the last 3 years?
