South Florida Winter Weather Obs!

#1 Postby rainydaze » Tue Jan 01, 2008 1:52 am

Special Weather Statement from Miami NWS

http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=FLZ068&warncounty=FLC099&firewxzone=FLZ068&local_place1=Greenacres+City+FL&product1=Special+Weather+Statement

I thought us SoFla's could gather here to report our "winter" weather conditions here for
Tues-Thursday. Even though we are at the very south of this cold front, we may get frost or a freeze, so let's post here and see how far south this front really goes. :)

Definitely blustery today but I think most of South Florida metro along the E coast will be spared a freeze due to the high winds tonight.

I am monitoring some mid to high-level clouds streaming from SW to NE from the GOM and Caribbean that may keep the temps in the 40s here in Southern Florida:

With the low-level stratus caused by cold air running over the relatively warmer waters of the GOM and Atlantic, its doubtful the immediate west coast of FL from about Clearwater south through Naples will get below 40.

Nice observation Gatorcane on the S FL mid to upper level cloud deck. Could save S FL from bitter cold tonite. I think the stratocumulus that we observe now along the SW coast may move offshore as the low level winds back to more northerly or even N-NE tonight so I think the immediate Gulf coast may still freeze. This freeze may be truly historic in that right now I see a very large portion of the FL peninsula dropping below 32 with many inland locations (probably as far south as the big lake) dropping into the 20s! When is the last time that you can remember dew points in the low 20s at WPB and Ft Laud at 1 PM. Dewpoints of 13 deg at Orlando and 8 degrees at Tallahassee. With clear skies and northerly drainage flow tonight we are set up for a devastating freeze for the agricultural industry.

I do agree the stratocumulus should stay offshore tonight but when was the last time there were freeze warnings where the winds stayed up at the speeds they are predicting tonight? 99% of the time a freeze happens in central and south florida when the winds are light or calm (i.e. when arctic highs manage to push south over the peninsula).

While freezes in central and south florida do happen from time to time (more so in central FL), the fact a freeze may happen while the winds are still blowing at 10-20mph+ (causing windchills in the 10s) is rare. I am wondering what will now happen with the vegetation here that could previously sustain short-lived freezes without wind (e.g. queen palms, sabal palms, etc)

latest NWS MIA forecast keeps bumping up the temps in South Florida (probably due to the possibility of mid to high-level cloud coverage I mention earlier in this thread). Latest Boca Raton forecast now keeps us well above freezing thankfully:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 38. Wind chill values as low as 30. Breezy, with a north wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

No mention of the high and mid-level cloud deck...just yet. I'm sure they will wait until this evening's discussion to mention it (if necessary)

...HARD FREEZE WARNING NOW IN EFFECT FOR NORTHWEST INTERIOR SECTIONS...
...FREEZE WARNING IN EFFECT FOR THE REMAINDER OF SOUTH FLORIDA EXCEPT
EAST COASTAL AREAS...

.DISCUSSION...THE STRONG COLD FRONT THAT MOVED THROUGH YESTERDAY
EVENING CONTINUES TO DIVE ACROSS THE CARIBBEAN AND ATLANTIC AS
COOL CANADIAN AIR MOVES SOUTH. ALL WE ARE LEFT WITH IS CLEAR SKIES AND
EXCELLENT COLD AIR ADVECTION. TEMPS ARE NOT EXPECTED TO RISE VERY
MUCH FOR THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON AND THEY WILL BEGIN TO CRASH
AFTER SUNSET... MUCH IN THE WAY DEW POINTS HAVE DONE THIS
AFTERNOON. ATTM THE FREEZING LINE IS EXPECTED TO REACH TO AROUND
THE TURNPIKE IN PALM BEACH... TO AROUND THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE
SUBURBS IN BROWARD... TO AROUND KROME AVE IN MIAMI DADE. THIS MAY
MAKE FROST POSSIBLE IN WIND SHELTERED AREAS EVEN IN THE EAST COAST
METROS, BUT IN WIND SHELTERED LOCATIONS ONLY AS THE WINDS ARE
EXPECTED TO REMAIN UP INTO THE 10 TO 15 MPH RANGE OVER THE METRO
AND AROUND 10 MPH INLAND. TEMPS ACROSS GLADES, HENDRY, COLLIER
WILL BE ESPECIALLY COLD TONIGHT. TEMPS ARE ONLY AROUND 50 AND WITH
DEW POINTS IN THE TEENS, CONTINUED CAA, AND CLEAR SKIES A HARD
FREEZE IS ON TAP. AROUND SUNRISE WINDS WILL GRADUALLY SHIFT TO A
MORE NORTH-NORTHEASTWARD DIRECTION AS THE COLD CANADIAN HIGH
SLOWLY LUMBERS EAST ACROSS THE SOUTHEASTERN STATES. THIS WILL START A
MODERATING TREND FOR S FL. THIS WILL ALSO BEGIN TO INCREASE
MOISTURE AND THE RAIN CHANCES ALONG THE EAST COAST THURSDAY
MORNING... BUT ONLY INTO THE SLIGHT CATEGORY.

I think the immediate east coast of FL may be spared subfreezing temps due to a slight onshore flow expected to develop afte midnight tonite. However, inland areas will plummet with hard freeze warnings now in effect for the counties around Lake O. May be some snow flurries near the cape tomorrow morning with the on shore flow developing. Hope one of our forum members can take some photos.

...VERY COLD TEMPS AND WIND CHILLS OVERNIGHT WITH LONG DURATIONS
BELOW FREEZING AND A HARD FREEZE INTERIOR...

.DISCUSSION...

TONIGHT...COLD DAYTIME TEMPS TODAY RANGING FROM MID 40S NORTH TO MID
50S SOUTH AND LOW DEW POINTS WILL ALLOW FOR A FAST TEMPERATURE FALL
AFTER SUNSET. AFTER REVIEWING 12Z DATA DECIDED THAT HARD FREEZE
WARNING SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO COVER ALL INTERIOR COUNTIES. WHILE THE
URBAN AREAS MAY JUST REACH TO AROUND 28 FOR A SHORT DURATION...
LARGE COVERAGE OF RURAL AREAS EXPECTED TO GET SEVERAL HOURS AOB 28F
AND SO THE UPGRADE SEEMED IN ORDER. COASTAL COUNTIES EXPECTED TO
DROP OFF QUICKLY THIS EVENING AS WELL...BUT SLIGHT ONSHORE COMPONENT
DEVELOPING ABOVE THE SURFACE SHOULD INHIBIT FURTHER TEMPERATURE DROP
DURING THE LATE NIGHT HOURS.

NNW WINDS 10-15 MPH THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT COMBINED WITH THE COLD
TEMPS WILL PRODUCE VERY COLD WIND CHILLS...IN THE TEENS OVER THE
INTERIOR AND 20S CLOSER TO THE COAST. A WIND CHILL WARNING HAS BEEN
POSTED FOR ALL EC FL COUNTIES.

34 degrees that I have outside. That might
be a bit low.
