I woke up this morning knowing a strong cold front was going to come through today and that we could get some rain and some winds
Across New England:
wind advisories and high wind warnings are up. along with frost and freeze advisories
what caught me off guard was when my weather radio went off indicating a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for parts of Vermont and New York.
I checked it out and it turns out about 10 severe thunderstorm warnings are also out across New York with a nice-looking squall line heading this way. Not only was this a suprise for me because of the hour of the day (6am and in New England I cannot recall an early svr tstorm watch before) but also the time of the year and the location... I know severe weather obviously continues down south through the winter but usually mid-September or so is the cut-off point in New England...
suprises this morning= many alerts out

That cold front is strong - went through here last night. Gale warnings were ended about an hour ago on Lake Michigan. The temperature drop was enough to trigger lake effect precip this morning. Two automated stations reported snow, but according to the Gaylord NWS the equipment has difficulty differentiating between wind blown rain and snow, and so they are discounting those reports. Waterspouts are a possibility here today, though the wind speeds are quite strong and may preclude development. Frost is a possibility tonight away from the Great Lakes.
Lake effect precip bands are occuring now and may be seen on radar:

Cold front blew thru overnight here in N-TX with much needed rain and strong northly winds gusting to 50 and 60 mph. Yesterdays high here was 104, today we will never make out of the mid 70's, and we are looking at a forecasted low tonight of 54, if that happen then will haved felt a 50 degree drop in temps in just 24 hours.
Hopefully our first frost we come by late October, just in time for the Great Pumpkin to come.

I can remember a few years back in Connecticut experiencing a couple strong storms during one week in October, 1998 (a relatively warm fall and early winter in those parts as I remember). Some late-night T-storm warnings were issued that week in Southern NE. It's very unusual getting storms late at night in NE in late summer, never mind fall. As a result, I remember this well. One storm that hit our area came around 7AM and I swear a lightening bolt hit about 100 feet from where I was sleeping...scared the hell out of me.
Btw concerning early morning, late season watches/warnings in the Northeast, the remnants of Hurricane Opal caused some Tornado Watches to be issued around 1AM for the hills as they moved through the region. I doubt too many in the region knew this was going on while they were sleeping...

Yeah WXWatcher91--our NOAA radios went off about 2 a.m. with flood warnings, and about 6 a.m. with the thunderstorm warnings and the warnings (flooding, high wind warnings) have pretty much continued today... it is very seldom that our radio wakes us up in the middle of the night...
Hope you are still okay in Keene... My daughter is okay in Southern NH, but lower areas around her are all flooded out, so she is probably house-bound for a while as there is lots of flooding around her.

wow, another severe weather situation building up today here in New England...
Past few days havent been November weather at all. here in Keene we've been in the 60s for highs. to are south 70s is the story.
much different from the cloudy, rainy/snowy weather last month.
slight chance of severe weather for all of the mid-Atlantic region and into western New England. main threat as usual is straight-line winds.
---------------------------------------
water levels still running a bit high here: kinda around the usual spring-time levels.
I let out a laugh when I read in the forecast discussion a few days ago that fire watches were being considered due to low humidity levels
