May 4th, 2006 Houston Hail Storm Analysis

#1 Postby Extremeweatherguy » Mon May 08, 2006 5:22 pm

I decided to make a page with information on the hail storm that blew through northwest Houston on May 4th, 2006.

My personal experience:

I had just gotten home when I learned that a severe thunderstorm was moving in. With this, I quickly ran up to get my camera hoping that I would get some nice shots of the storm. When it arrived, heavy rain began to fall with vivid lightning, but overall it was un-eventful. Next thing I knew, however, dime sized hail began to fall. This dime sized hail lasted about 5 minutes and then grew to become penny sized (the severe limit). After another 5 minutes, the hail grew again...now nickel size. The next thing I knew, all hell had broken loose and a five to ten minute period of quarter to tennis ball sized hail was unleashed. The noise the hail made was crazy. I feared that a window would break at any time. But, luckily, my immediate area escaped with overall minor damages. The damages that were common at my immediate location included holes in a nearby shed...a cracked solar light...dents in cars...some shingle damage...and lots of lost tree foliage.

Here is a short, slow-motion video of the hail falling in the area I was located:

Also, here are a few pictures I captured after the storm:

Around the area:

Around the area damages were even worse, and hail to baseball size was even reported. The damages included more extensive car dents...busted car windows...and even a few busted housing and building windows. I do not have any pictures of this damage.

..More information may be available on local news websites or through a google or SPC search..

A roofer was just in the area within the last hour and the roofing damage is actually much, much worse than I thought. Most of the homes he looked at need a new roof after the storm.
