The first day of summer is prompting medical concerns about hot weather.
Dallas County health authorities said they were especially worried that a hot, dry June could be the precursor to a summer inferno.
The first half of 2006 was the hottest on record.
Health authorities launched a heat awareness campaign on Wednesday because summer heat can often be deadly in North Texas—especially for the elderly and for young children.
Ten cases of heat-related illness have already been reported in the region.
Dallas County Health and Human Services director Zachary Thompson said he is concerned that thousands of citizens may either not have air conditioning available, or they may be afraid to switch it, on fearing expensive electric bills.
"What we found is that there are isolated senior citizens out there who don't know who to contact—or they may be so proud that they don't want to pick up the phone," Thompson said.
He urged people to call regularly on elderly or infirm relatives, friends and neighbors. "The check on your neighbor program is a real key in definitely getting to those needy individuals who, oftentimes, we don't know," Thompson said.
The Dallas County Health and Human Services division has air conditioning units available to residents who can demonstrate a financial need. The agency can also help subsidize energy bills for low-income families.
If you or someone you love needs help getting ready for the summer months, call the Dallas County Heat Emergency Hotline at 214-819-6001. The agency is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Similar programs are available in surrounding counties.
