TORNADO WARNING
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WAKEFIELD VA
318 PM EDT FRI AUG 11 2006

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN WAKEFIELD HAS ISSUED A

* TORNADO WARNING FOR...
CITY OF HAMPTON IN SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA

* UNTIL 400 PM EDT

* AT 315 PM EDT...THE PUBLIC REPORTED A WATERSPOUT NEAR GRANDVIEW
MOVING SOUTHWEST AT 15 MPH.

* THE WATERSPOUT / TORNADO IS EXPECTED TO BE NEAR...
PHOEBUS BY 330 PM EDT.

THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE DURING A TORNADO IS IN A BASEMENT. GET UNDER A
WORKBENCH OR OTHER PIECE OF STURDY FURNITURE. IF NO BASEMENT IS
AVAILABLE...SEEK SHELTER ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF THE BUILDING IN AN
INTERIOR BATHROOM...CLOSET OR HALLWAY. USE BLANKETS OR PILLOWS TO
COVER YOUR BODY. STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.

Oh . . . the caps made me think it was now! I was very confused when I pulled up the radar to see nothing but clutter, but this was earlier. Do you know if it made "landfall", for lack of a better word? Phoebus isn't exactly a rural area, it probably would have caused some damage there if it did go ashore.

Havent gotten any reports as to whether or not it moved onshore. We get these scenarios every now and then: a waterspout forms very close to land and NWS issues a tornado warning to be on the side of caution since occasionally they do move onshore and cause minor damage. This was simply a waterspout/cold air funnel. We had relatively cool air over warm water with enough low level turning to produce a funnel cloud. Not too unusual at all.

Really? I have never heard about the Hampton Roads area ever having cold air funnels, much less having them be "not too unusual." Hmm, thanks for the info - guess you learn something new every day.
