Tornado Watch for Southeast Texas

#1 Postby southerngale » Tue Oct 10, 2006 12:32 pm

I expected a chance of severe weather later this week with the front, but I admit, this Tornado Watch took me by surprise.

Thunderstorms are fine, but I hope there's no tornadoes! They're very skeery.

...SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAINFALL BY
EARLY EVENING...

AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE APPROACHING FROM THE WEST WILL COMBINE
WITH INCREASING MOISTURE TO PRODUCE NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA EARLY
THIS EVENING. A FEW OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS HAVE THE POTENTIAL OF
REACHING SEVERE LEVELS.

THE SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN IN SOUTHEAST TEXAS EARLY
THIS EVENING...SPREADING TO THE REST OF THE FORECAST AREA IN
LOUISIANA BY MIDNIGHT.

BRIEF HEAVY RAINS COULD PRODUCE MINOR FLOODING OF STREETS, FEEDER ROADS,
AND LOW SPOTS. SINCE WE`VE HAD A RATHER DRY PERIOD OVER THE LAST
FEW DAYS AND WITH THE FAST MOVEMENT OF THIS SYSTEM, SIGNIFICANT
FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED.

At about 1pm I was hit by a strong storm where I was. This storm produced 55mph+ wind gusts at my location and downed a large 4 foot long (3" diameter) branch, bent a 15 foot tall tree, ripped ply wood off the roof of the building, and flipped a dumpster. It was very scary.

Here is a storm report from west of my location at the time.

1725 UNK 1 SE WALLER HARRIS TX 3005 9591 LARGE TREES DOWN, BARN UNDER CONSTRUCTION KNOCKED DOWN, SOME TREES SHEARED OFF HALFWAY UP THE TRUNK (HGX)

This same cell must have been what got me. However, it seems like the winds were even worse in that area (gusts to 70-80mph perhaps?).

Nothing severe here, at least yet. Just some fairly heavy rain, lots of thunder and lightning, and a little windy. It looks to be stronger in some areas around me though.
