Authorities blamed the accident on a quick-moving line of severe storms that the
National Weather Service said produced gusts up to 51 mph, rain and small hail and caused power outages.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Deputy Marylin Mayo, who was riding with Cpl. Linden "Beau" Ramier, was listed in critical condition at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans, authorities said.
The deputies' car was part of a miles-long procession for Deputy Hilery Mayo Jr., who was killed Saturday when his car struck a tree as responded to a 911 call.
Marylin Mayo is not related to Hilery Mayo, who was the first deputy in the parish to be killed in the line of duty since 1979.
Also on Wednesday in Texas, several young people in Dallas who apparently had been fishing had to be rescued from a flooded creek after an afternoon downpour.
Storms also spawned at least four tornadoes in northwestern Oklahoma Wednesday night. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury, but there were road closures and power outages, officials said.
