Power Point Presentation Of Past Houston Floods

#1 Postby Ptarmigan » Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:14 pm

Here is a Power Point I found about major Houston floods; 1915, 1929, and 1935.

http://www.wxresearch.com/flood/floodwebshowa.ppt

1915 flood was caused by a major hurricane that made landfall south of Galveston as a Category 3. The damage it did was severe and when adjust with 2005 inflation, it is much worse than Andrew.

The 1929 flood was really bad because heavy rain fell in April and May, just about a couple weeks apart. Think about that happening today. It would be much worse than Allison in terms of damage and lives loss. It could be one of the worst disasters in US history.

One thing to remember about comparing past floods in the Houston area to current times is there is MUCH MUCH MORE FLOOD CONTROL AND ABATEMENT infrastructure in place now. Of course when one encounters an Allison type scenario there isn't a flood control system in the world that could control or handle that!
