Mark Schweitzer, Electronics Technician at NWS Louisville, passed away at his home on the evening of April 21 while exercising. At a rate of 30 to 40 miles of walking/running each week, Mark had logged hundreds of miles in the past few months in a quest to improve his health. Mark was 48.
Mark began his career with the NWS in an electronics intern position at WSFO Indianapolis in February, 1983. He accepted a position at Cheyenne after his internship. From there Mark moved to Louisville, then to Paducah, on to Grand Junction and finally to Boulder. After a brief stint outside the NWS as a computer analyst for a private company Mark was re-hired at WFO Louisville in 1999.
During his NWS career Mark received numerous awards for his dedication to the NWS mission. He never questioned a work assignment. He simply accomplished the task at hand, always with a high degree of professionalism. Just this past week, Mark worked overtime during the very early morning hours to help with severe weather. On the day of his death, Mark spent the day doing a tornado damage survey aiding a thinly staffed storm survey crew.
Mark was also a football coach at St. Athanasius Church as well as a big U of L fan!
Mark is survived by his wife, Tina, and three children, Amanda, Steven and Kyle.
Mark will be greatly missed here at NWS Louisville.
