The AMS denouncing some meterologists?

#1 Postby tronbunny » Sat Jan 21, 2012 9:00 am

I'm not sure what this is all about, but I feel that weather is science and a little bit of art.
Should it be politicized? I know we try not to do that here.
There is a website that seems to disparage some meterologists that do not see solid ties between human industry and current climate trends. The group called Forecast the Facts is calling upon the AMS to "make" local mets report the statistics as evidence of human driven climatology.

Sad if true. Its no secret that groups like the AMS have been pro-AGW at the high levels for a while.

Would be absurd though IMO for them to start telling scientists to accept their view or leave.

Interesting that this is coming out this week with the National AMS convention going on in NO. We have several members in attendance on different levels.

Isn't this basically a social group? How can they 'make' any member forecast anything?

If they start pushing people around, they lose members, right? How does that help them?

I'm not totally versed on the AMS and it's role, but I do know that membership in it isn't just a social thing. It is a "badge of honor"(?) if you are granted membership. Anyone that knows more/better please feel free to correct me and/or add information.

I agree 100%, when I got granted in I felt it as an honor. Thats not getting the Seal but the membership itself. Another thing I believe is that anyone who does have membership should be allowed to call themselves a MET and if they do not meet the requirements for the membership they shouldn't label themselves as such. Thats a topic for another time though. Great statement!
