Microburst or Tornado

The national weather service will be in town today. A severe storm hit the area last night. I was on the Turnpike going home and the sky turned pitch black. The winds and rain accompanied by blowing leaves made it really hard to drive. When I got home, I turned on the news only to find that Cranberry Township which is about 15 miles from my home was really hit hard. The winds ripped roofs off of houses and trees out of the ground. The wall of a bank was completely torn down. A very large construction trailer was rolled thru a parking lot and into the front of a store. Many heavy duty (major ) metal utilities poles were bent in half. Approx. 7-10 injuries but (Thank God) no fatalities. I keep ya posted as to what they find. We did have a high wind warning prior to the storm.

Karen, I'm glad that you got home safely! Keep us informed as to what the NWS comes up with.

The rain and wind blew through at around midnight. Marty came and woke me because we briefly lost power and I had to reset my alarm clock. Wouldn't you know that when I reset it and returned to bed, we lost the power for good. Marty set his phone alarm just in case the power didn't come back up and left the light on next to his side of the bed. The power came back on sometime around 4:45 am this morning fortunately.

I didn't see many tree limbs down - just alot of leaves, but something must've hit one of the power generators for the power to be out that long. When the storm came, the trees were really whipping around and it poured. There was a death attributed to the storm last night in Haverford, PA. A tree fell on a car and killed the driver.

hey karan, saw the Butler county malay on TWC. was wondering the same myself (tornado or microburst). will be checking in for your update on what the NWS has to say. glad you are ok... p

Pawlee, the Butler county border is 3 miles from my house!!!

This just in - The National Weather Service has confirmed that it was a microburst that hit the area and not a tornado.
Cranberry Township remains in a state of emergency.

There certainly was some wild weather yesterday. Sorry to hear that people were injured, but glad there were no fatalities.

Glad to hear that it wasn't a tornado, but either way, the damage is done.

I thought that the wind was supposed to be calming down towards the end of the day? It's worse down here at the shore now than it was this morning!!

I swear that if it was cloudy out I would think that a tornado was on it's way because it is howling and rattling out there!

A microburst certainly can do alot of damage
in mere seconds, similar to a tornado! I saw
that on TWC, this morning, too, while I was
getting ready for work. Crews were out
trying to restore power, then. Glad you're ok,
Karan!

Steph, has it calmed down any at your
place, yet?

I see that the Butler, PA was mentioned. This thing really affected a large area.

Yea I think the wind had something to do with the tragedy involving the ferry..Glad your ok though stephanie :wink:

I'll say that is a lot of storm damage. 38 storm reports, (1 being a confirmed tornado) in a 10 hour, 10 minute period.
